Sean Hayes Wins the Role of Larry in the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges

Back in 2009, writer/directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly announced a surprising cast for their upcoming The Three Stooges movie that included Benicio Del Toro as Moe, Sean Penn as Larry, and Jim Carrey as Curly. MGM ran into a financial crisis that delayed the movie until last December when 20th Century Fox took over the production, at which point, the Farrellys' cast had already moved on. While the Farrellys have been casting the movie for months, their new cast is almost as surprising as the first.
The end of last month saw Will Sasso (Mad TV, Life As We Know It) become the first new cast member, landing the role of Curly. Sean Hayes is the first actor to join Sasso. Deadline reports that Hayes has been cast as Larry, the more even-tempered of the three. James Marsden (the X-Men trilogy) was reportedly in contention for the role as well.
The part of Moe is still not cast, though Hank Azaria (The Smurfs) is rumored to be the frontrunner for the role.
The Farrellys' Three Stooges will be all new material in three, 27-minute segments. "It's by far the riskiest project we've ever done, without question, but it is also the one closest to our hearts," said Peter Farrelly in December, when Fox took over the project.
