Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth Draw Mixed Reactions in Hunger Games Casting
04.06.11 by reelz
Lionsgate announced Monday that the roles of Peeta and Gale had been cast for the movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. Fan reaction has ranged from aggravation to confusion to excitement. We talked with the most popular fan sites to get their reactions.
Personally, I am quite happy with the casting. Jennifer Lawrence is 20, therefore casting older actors for Peeta and Gale makes sense.
I have seen Liam Hemsworth in the TV Show The Elephant Princess where he was a part of the main love triangle - so I can totally see him play out Gale. As for Josh Hutcherson, he has the soft boyish charm that Hunger Games fans associate with Peeta. I'm sure we can all trust the makeup artists to create brilliance onscreen.

I think I'm actually in the minority of Hunger Games fans who really had no one in particular in mind when it came to Peeta, Gale or any character in the series (Katniss, too). Even when people started discussing their "fan casting" choices for the movie, no one really came to mind. Sure, some fan choices seemed like a good idea -- but I was never attached to anyone person in the role. So for me, it's not so hard to accept the studio's choices for the roles as it is for some fans, who already had someone else cast in their mind.
That said, I can't say I'm exactly thrilled and ecstatic by the choices announced today. I haven't really seen much from either Josh Hutcherson or Liam Hemsworth -- but Lionsgate must have seen something in the auditions to convince them that Josh and Liam were the best guys for these roles. Their acting, their passion, their chemistry with Jen Lawrence; whatever it was that sold Lionsgate on their performance; I am putting my trust in the studio to make the right choices and produce the best movie possible. Could they make some mistakes along the way? Certainly. It wouldn't be the first time. But I don't want to judge until I've seen the finished product.
In the long run, I think it's unfair to judge any of the actors cast in The Hunger Games until they've gotten a chance to show us what they've got. Until we start seeing some footage (and I do mean footage from filming, not just still images), I'm going to reserve judgment and give them the benefit of the doubt. And for now, I'm going to put my faith in Lionsgate, Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins to make the best movie possible.

We have to trust the creative decisions in casting and will support Gary Ross's overall vision and those of the very experienced production team.

Although they weren't my top choices, I trust the filmmakers to chose who's best for the role. Happy we have a Peeta and Gale, and excited to see what these boys can do!

I am very happy about Josh Hutcherson being cast, he was in my top three for a very long time. I think he's a very talented actor, and a good person. I am unsure about the casting of Gale in Liam, but I trust Debra Zane and Gary Ross, because they have both together and separately been part of casting some of the best films of the last 20+ years ... Congratulations to both Josh and Liam, they must be all kinds of happy right now!

I'm really happy but strangely could see them swapping roles too, especially with their hair colour and stuff! I am glad things are moving quick! Haymitch soon? :)

I'm not happy with Josh as Peeta. He is nothing like I imagined Peeta. But then again, none of the actors in the running were. LOL! I just hope the acting makes up for the physical appearance not being what I would have liked. I can get over him not looking the part if he can actually play the part well. Maybe...

Even though Josh and Liam were not my first choice to play Peeta and Gale I have complete faith that Lionsgate and Gary Ross felt they were the best actors for the part. I cannot wait to see them along with Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen.

I had mixed reactions when I first heard that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth were up for the roles of Peeta and Gale, respectively. They don't immediately strike me as Katniss' fellow tribute and best friend. But I've seen Josh in The Kids Are Alright and Liam in The Last Song, and I enjoyed both of those performances. I also have utmost trust in Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate. I don't know exactly what went on in their auditions, but there must have been magic in the room with the way the boys read and how they interacted with Jennifer Lawrence. Therefore, I am excited to see them bring the world of The Hunger Games to life.

Ironically I was watching interviews of Josh Hutcherson this morning and commented on how I would be cool with his casting and a couple hours later, he gets cast! I feel he has great acting skills and will be able to portray Peeta perfectly. I do not know much about Liam so I won't knock the guy, but I will give him a chance. Obviously Lionsgate saw something inthese two actors that made them want to cast them. I have faith in Gary Ross!

Though Josh and Liam were not my first choices for Peeta and Gale, I am still excited by the casting news, things are really starting to move now!
Josh is very well spoken, he's funny and sweet, and definitely has charisma. He is also very talented, and I have faith he can do Peeta justice. He may not have the natural Peeta looks, (hair color, eye color), but those aspects can be changed. He loves the books, he loves the character, and he is all ready excited of being Peeta in Mockingjay (my favorite book of the trilogy) so I am very happy that Josh will be our "boy with the bread."
I am not as familiar with Liam's acting, but if Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins feel he is the right for the part of Gale, then I will support his decision. Cannot wait until we get the first images of Jennifer, Josh and Liam in character!

At first, I thought it was a mistake as physically speaking, Liam is blonde so he should be Peeta andJosh was brown so he should be Gale. But they already did it with Jennifer Lawrence for the role of Katniss so this isn't really an issue.
I think Josh Hutcherson is a good choice as he exudes kindness and sobriety. These are really important qualities to portray Peeta. Regarding Liam Hemsworth, I wasn't expecting him as Gale but I didn't see any movies with him so I can't really tell.
Lots of fans are disappointed right now because they wanted Hunter Parrish for the role of Peeta. I think they'll get over it with time. For Liam, I hope Nina Jacobson, Gary Ross or Suzanne Collins will explain their choice as it is clearly not an obvious one. But I'm pretty confident they know what they're doing.
