Captain America: The First Avenger Going Back into Production
04.06.11 by BJSprecher
A rumor surfaced a couple of weeks ago that Captain America: The First Avenger would be going back into production after having wrapped back in October of last year. According to Crave, a "staffer" for Marvel Studios leaked the news that one of Captain America's (Chris Evans) prop shields would be "sent back to the UK in two weeks to be used in reshoots." Well, now we know that Crave's insider information was at least half right. Captain America is going back into production for at least one day, but the shoot will take place in LA, not the UK.
Here's the permit for Captain America: The First Avenger (CATFA), as posted on OnLocationVacations:
THE PRODUCTION COMPANY: Vita Ray Productions Inc
WILL BE FILMING: Frostbite
UNDER PERMIT: F00037793
LOCATION: 555 W. 5th St
PREP DATE(S): 4/08/11, 12:00 P.M. – 5:00 A.M
FILMING DATE(S): 4/09/11
FILMING HOUR(S): 5:00 A.M. – 10:00 P.M
The permit doesn't say "Captain America," "First Avenger," or even "Marvel" anywhere on it, so how do we know that it refers to CATFA? For one, a UK resident discovered that CATFA would be filming under the code name "Frostbite" back in May of last year and shared the news in a forum post. The name is apparently an allusion to the fact that Cap fell into the icy waters of the Atlantic during the latter days of the war and was adrift in suspended animation until The Avengers thawed him out in the present. Secondly, Steve Rogers' transformation into Captain America was accomplished by using a combination of the Super Soldier Serum and Vita-Rays, which is the listed name of the production company.
What is not clear is exactly what director Joe Johnston is shooting. It seems unlikely that he would be filming re-shoots considering the change in locale from the UK to LA. What's more likely is that Johnston is either shooting the ubiquitous Stan Lee Marvel cameo or (a much more exciting possibility) an end-of-credits scene that will link the movie to next year's super-team movie, The Avengers. Whatever it turns out to be, it seems we will know soon enough. Considering the date, time and location have been posted online, it's a good bet that every fanboy, amateur photographer and paparazzo in the area with a hankering for a glimpse of Chris Evans in costume will swarm the location.
The movie is based on the classic Marvel Comics character created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby that first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 in March 1941 (then Timely Comics). The script was written by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. The cast includes Sebastian Stan as James "Bucky" Barnes, Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark and Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine.
