New Director Hired for The Crow Reboot

Relativity Media has formally announced that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) will direct the "re-imagining" of The Crow, based on the comic book by James O'Barr and originally adapted in 1994. The Crow follows the character of Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to avenge his wife's murder.
"Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is an incredibly talented and imaginative filmmaker," said Relativity president Tucker Tooley. "We are thrilled to have him at the helm and are excited to work with both [producer Edward R.] Pressman and [Spain-based production company] Apaches [Entertainment] on what we all believe will be a compelling and innovative re-imagining of The Crow."
"The original Crow was groundbreaking cinema," said Pressman. "Its gothic visual and musical ideas influenced a generation and cinema itself. With Juan Carlos, we have every confidence that his new Crow will have a similar impact on the contemporary audience."
The announcement of Fresnadillo means the end of the version writer-director Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Blade) has been working on since 2008.
In February 2010, Norrington said the he had "opened discussions with major cast but nothing is final yet," but later had his script rewritten by musician and screenwriter Nick Cave. Mark Wahlberg was reportedly offered the lead role last October, shortly before Norrington left the project, citing that a unnamed actor had rejected the script that Cave had rewritten and asked for another draft. The request was too much for Norrington.
Fresnadillo won't have to worry about an actor rejecting another rewrite, since there is no script or actor yet cast for The Crow. Fresnadillo will reportedly collaborate with a screenwriter once one is hired.
The original Crow was one the top 25 grossing movies of 1994, spawning three sequels — 1996's The Crow: City of Angels, 2000's The Crow: Salvation, and 2005's The Crow: Wicked Prayer — the last two of which went straight to DVD. All four Crow movies were produced by Pressman.
