DreamWorks Prepping Real Steel Sequel

Apparently, the folks at DreamWorks like what they see of director Shawn Levy's (Date Night) new movie, Real Steel, because the studio is already prepping for a sequel. According to Deadline, John Gatins, who wrote the screenplay for Real Steel from a story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, has been hired to begin work on the next installment. This is somewhat unusual considering the first movie won't debut in theaters for another six months and the property is not a known franchise (yet), but Deadline speculates that the decision is based on "strong response to internal screenings" at DreamWorks and because of the reaction the footage received at a screening at the recent CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas.
Based on a short story by prolific novelist Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), Real Steel takes place in a near-future world where human boxers have been replaced by bigger, stronger (and repairable) robots. When down-on-his-luck ex-fighter Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) finds a junked robot, he decides to train "Noisy Boy" to fight and takes it out on the Robot Boxing circuit, aided along the way by a son (Dakota Goyo) that he never knew he had. Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn and Olga Fonda also star.
