One of the most enduring TV and movie franchises in entertainment history, Star Trek started in the 1960s with the original TV series, and will soon unveil its latest movie installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, next month. Shrouded in secrecy, all that is known is that the Enterprise crew will take on John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), a Starfleet officer who seeks revenge for reasons that have yet to be divulged. However, with the new Star Trek series having the ability to use older canon while also hurtling into undiscovered territory, whether John Harrison is actually Khan (as fans continue to purport) will be up for debate until the movie opens. In the meantime, there is still other possibilities for Harrison's identity, which can only fans can prepare themselves for the next movie by catching up with the rest of the franchise. Fortunately, we have a plan for anyone to become familiar with the Star Trek franchise, and all you need is 8 hours to do it.

It's tax time again, and while pouring over receipts and figuring out complicated tax forms isn't always fun, it's good to know that not even the IRS is free from auditing. In particular, the House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee is interested in a Star Trek parody video the IRS created in 2010 in its own TV studio. (Yes, the IRS apparently has its own TV studio). That video, along with a Gilligan's Island parody, apparently cost $60,000 to make, with the Star Trek video taking up most of that budget. If that seems like a lot of publicly-funded money for a video made with employees playing roles for a video that was only shown internally, the IRS concurs.
"The IRS recognizes and takes seriously our obligation to be good stewards of government resources and taxpayer dollars," the agency said in a statement to Fox News. "There is no mistaking that this video did not reflect the best stewardship of resources."

The Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer hit the interwebz today and it looks like Captain James T. Kirk will have a "personal score to settle," with a "one-man weapon of mass destruction" (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) which may not be hard to believe when one looks over Kirk's history in Starfleet, particularly when you consider the lengthier history of the Captain Kirk from an alternate timeline (William Shatner). Starfleet has a list of malfeasance by their most roguish member as long as a Bajoran wormhole and he is wanted in the better part of three quadrants for various crimes. Following is a list of Kirk's crimes, if you encounter said individual, you would be better off hitting warp 9 in the opposite direction.

Leonard Nimoy enjoyed his return as Spock this summer in J.J. Abrams's Star Trek reboot, but despite having directed Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Nimoy told Star Trek Magazine that he won't be directing a sequel.
[Star Trek] is technically on a scale that I would be not be able to handle. The technology has increased and evolved so far beyond the kinds of things that we were doing when I was making those films. It's beyond me. It takes a certain skill and an understanding of the technology that I do not have to achieve the integration of the sets with the extraordinary special effects that are in this film.
Despite saying he would not appear in a Star Trek last month, Nimoy said he would be willing to return if Abrams asks him to.
If the phone rings again, and its J.J. calling to talk about another project, I'm more than willing to enter a discussion about it, and explore it with him. I have the feeling that my involvement has run its course — but then again, I've had that feeling many times before. I've felt that I was finished with all this, so this was a very pleasant surprised to be called back after all these years and be able to make a contribution here. If it happens again, I would glady work for him again.

The screenwriters for Star Trek, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, are already working on a sequel and at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Orci was able to share that the sequel might be only the beginning of a two-movie storyline:
Nothing was decided [at the last meeting] ... [The studio said to us] "We thought maybe you could do that as like 2 and 3."
Two-part storylines are not unusual in the Star Trek universe, with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan wrapping up in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. While Orci doesn't give a lot of details away, clearly he and Kurtzman have something big in mind for the next Star Trek.

The war of words between Star Trek's William Shatner and George Takei is heating up according to the UK's Daily Mail.
After alluding to the Star Trek captain's legendary ego, Takei snubbed Shatner when he didn't send him an invite for his wedding to Brad Alman last month.
The snub lead the former Kirk to an amusing and seemingly less-than-provoked rant on his blog theshatnerproject.com in which he stated "it's so obvious that there is a psychosis there" and that there "must be something inside of George that is festering and makes him so unhappy that he takes it out on me, an ineffective total stranger."
Shatner ended by saying "I feel nothing but pity for him."
