"Welcome to Indiana basketball."
You would be hard pressed to find a sports fan who didn't include tonight's primetime movie in a list of the best sports movies of all time, typically somewhere near the top. Though constructed on a rather formulaic underdog plot, the nostalgic setting of Hoosiers in a '50s-era Middle America town that cherishes its high school basketball team and the outstanding performances by Gene Hackman as the new coach with the troubled past and Dennis Hopper as the town drunk seeking redemption elevate the movie beyond cliché to timeless classic status.
Written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh — the same creative team behind another sports movie classic, Rudy — Hoosiers was inspired by the true story of the Milan High School basketball team that won the 1954 Indiana state championship despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them. While away the first night of fall by returning with us to a time when small town high schools still competed against bit city schools and everyone got a chance to make a comeback.hoosiers
