The movie came out when Stallone was at the peak of his career, just after his megahits Cliffhanger and Demolition Man and The Specialist went on to become his third hit in a row. The movie earned more than $170M internationally. But Stallone nearly missed starring in the movie. Steven Seagal was the studio's first choice, but they balked at his $9M salary and offered the role to Sly. David Fincher was also slated to direct but producers got cold feet after the poor performance of Aliens 3.
