The son (Lillo Brancato) of an honest bus driver (Robert De Niro) looks up to a local mob boss (Chazz Palminteri) amid racial tension in 1960s New York.
In a coming-of-age movie, a young main character is usually faced with a challenge that aids in the transition from the innocence of youth to the realities of adulthood. While the formula of a character's personal growth is usually the same, the way the story is told is usually different — and successful — which is why the coming-of-age movie is a constant year after year.
Whether it's a young wizard learning how he will face the adult nemesis that killed his parents or four friends sneaking off to see a dead body in the woods, everyone has their favorite coming-of-age movie, which is why Hollywood Dailies decided to take a look back at a few classics of the genre, and have included a few surprises along the way. Check out the clip above to see if your favorite made our list.
