Last month, Clash of the Titans director Louis Leterrier said that the 1981 original on which his movie is based was his "first like 'wow' experience" growing up, comparing it to the reaction many movie fans his age had to their first viewing of Star Wars. So, when he accepted the job of directing the updated remake, he said that it was important for him to "really make it personal," creating "more than just one movie, creating a universe, creating something to expand," which sounded very much like plans for a Clash franchise.
Following Leterrier's comments, Clash screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi told MTV that Leterrier "kind of has a master plan" for future Clash installments and that they would be "thrilled" to write a sequel. Now, Leterrier has confirmed in an interview with FirstShowing that he already has sequel plans in place, saying that his deal with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures actually came with the provision that he bring more to the table than a one-off.
I wrote two other movies.... It was three movies. Warners came to me and said, "We'll greenlight your movie if you promise us [two more]."... And I said, "Thanks a lot," because I love doing that. And I had to write two stories. So Clash of the Titans is, and especially Titans is, actually a bigger movie. So Titans are coming.
Leterrier added the caveat that Clash has to perform well at the box office before any sequels will get the go-ahead. He also implied that Perseus (played by Sam Worthington) may not be featured in subsequent chapters.
Let's see, knock on wood, that this will work. And I promise you that I've got more. And I've got good more. It's not like I've got more of the same, I've got more of different, and mythology is just like… We've opened the door.
It goes beyond any heroes that you've heard of and stuff like that.... It's fun. It's good! That's why I was like, great, okay it's a remake, but the door is open to Greek mythology, so we'll see!
Greek mythology is populated with numerous heroes and countless monsters, so there's no telling what Leterrier could have planned for his sequels. However, if the original Clash of the Titans was such an influence on him, perhaps he'll attempt to update the other Greek myth-inspired movie to feature the stop-motion animation of Ray Harryhausen, Jason and the Argonauts. Bring on the Hydra!
