Which Comic Book-Inspired Movies Are the Best? (No Capes!)
Superheroes were in demand among moviegoers in 2012, claiming the first, second, and fifth spots on the list of the highest-grossing movies of the year, but the recent announcement that rising star Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) has joined the cast of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For reminded us that some of the best comic-based movies don't have anything to do with superheroes at all. A fertile ground for movie adaptations, the comic book medium encompasses every imaginable genre of fiction and even non-fiction, with stories that deal with everything from the mundane — a pair of geek girls rage against, well, everythig — to the fantastic — a secret police force exists to monitor alien activities on Earth — to the sublime — the son of a princess ventures into a magical land to recover a fallen star. In a civil society, there are few professions more reprehensible than that of hitman, cleaner, assassin, a job that, by definition, requires the death of another human being to exist at all. In real life, you wouldn't want to meet a hitman, let alone get to know one, but Hollywood hitmen are often far more interesting, engaging, relatable and...handsome, like Brad Pitt in his new movie, Killing Them Softly. Of course, it wouldn't be fair to dismiss Pitt's second go-round — the first being John Smith in Mr. & Mrs. Smith — as a contender for the movie hitmen hall of fame based solely on his looks, so we'll reserve judgment until Killing Them Softly debuts on Friday. Modern masters like Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma continue to elevate the genre by perfecting it, while innovative filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie and Takashi Miike have helped to broaden the genre by refusing to be slaves to gangster movie tropes. A Road to Perdition sequel may seem an unusual decision if you saw the 2002 movie, which followed a mobster (Tom Hanks) who brings his son along on his quest for revenge when his wife and other son are murdered. However, Road to Perdition was based on author Max Alan Collins' graphic novel, which has received two sequels in novel form: Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise. Rumors that Collins had adapted Purgatory into a screenplay that he wanted to direct surfaced in 2008, and Collins recently updated the progress on a sequel to Movieweb.
