Vin Diesel is one celebrity who has embraced social media, using his Facebook page to talk to fans and ask them their opinions on his upcoming projects. Diesel even refers to his Facebook account as "Our page," even though he likely is the only one allowed to make administrative changes.
Now that Diesel has the hugely successful Fast Five currently in theaters, the actor already has a couple projects lined up: The Machine, which starts shooting this fall, and a third installment in the Riddick series, which began with 2000's Pitch Black and continued with 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick.
Diesel spoke about Riddick 3 on his Facebook page as early as August of 2009, when he revealed that a third installment was all "about rating" with both Diesel and writer/director David Twohy wanting an R-rating for the next Riddick movie. In February of 2010, Universal made Riddick 3 official, with plans to distribute the movie, and, as Diesel revealed in March, Riddick 3 will get to keep its R-rating if the budget is kept small.
Diesel's latest Facebook update says that the budget is so small he'll be feeling the effects in his own wallet.

Since the first two movies in the "Riddick" series were not exactly crowd pleasers, many were surprised at the announcement that a third movie was on the way — even though writer-director David Twohy and title star Vin Diesel had both expressed interest in returning. Now we have an official synopsis for Riddick, formerly The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking, courtesty of ShockTillYouDrop. While it's somewhat similar to the leaked story details reported months back by THR, there's no mention of the "trisons" and "mud demons."

A recent report announced that a third Riddick movie will be released domestically by Universal, with both Vin Diesel and writer-director David Twohy returning to the franchise. Twohy previously revealed that the upcoming sequel will "feel more like Pitch Black than The Chronicles of Riddick," but few other plot details have been released. However, included at the end of a THR report of a Russian distribution sale of Riddick 3 at the European Film Market was a brief synopsis of the movie.
Though billed as a back-to-basics approach to the character popularized by Diesel, the script features the character — the most wanted man in the galaxy — left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with "trisons" (three-legged bisons) and "mud demons." He must then contend withtwo squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles.
Production on Riddick 3 could begin later this year.

Vin Diesel has kept fans updated about another Riddick movie, mentioning in December that a Riddick 3 "script [was] complete." Now a third Riddick movie is finally official. Variety reports that Universal will distribute the movie, with David Twohy returning to helm his own script.
What Riddick 3 will be about is being kept secret, though Twohy has previously revealed that Riddick 3 will "feel more like Pitch Black than The Chronicles of Riddick" and will be "Riddick-centric." Production dates are currently being scheduled so as not to coincide with Fast and Furious 5. Diesel has admitted that there are scripts for two more installments of Fast and Furious.

Despite the critical drubbing of Chronicles of Riddick, neither star Vin Diesel nor writer/director David Twohy have given up on making another Riddick movie. Diesel used his Facebook page to announce some news about the next installment of Riddick:
The Riddick discussion is about rating now .... Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the COR series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black ....
One Studio exec suggested doing both The Underverse and The Furyan, (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second.
The good news- David Twohy's script comes in next month.
Diesel has said that he and Twohy planned for Chronicles to be the start of a trilogy, one that would take place sequentially before Pitch Black, and that he and Twohy could make the next two Riddick movie simultaneously, though his Facebook update suggests they would only do this if they can get their R-rating. Twohy gave more details about the next Riddick to ShockTilYouDrop, including an explanation of what went wrong in Chronicles of Riddick :
I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment. Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with Riddick that we shouldn't have made. We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that Pitch Black was, and we'll spend less money doing it.
The Riddick character continues to spawn successful video games (with Diesel providing the voice), but Twohy basically concedes that to continue making Riddick movies means borrowing from Pitch Black in more ways than just focus:
The third movie would be more modestly-scaled and it would probably feel more like Pitch Black then Chronicles. It will always be Riddick-centric. If the question is whether it will be more like the first one than the second one, the difference is that yeah, you can sell it on its creatures and say "This is a creature fest and we're going to go out as us vs. the creatures," but that's like a lot of different movies. However, the hallmark of a good movie, and I think Pitch Black is a good movie, is that even if you took the creatures out of the picture, you'd still have some pretty interesting character dynamics going on within that group, and it's almost like you can tell the same story without the creature or substitute some other external pressure on the group, because there were internal pressures as well that were interesting.
