Hayden Christensen's first post-Star Wars sci-fi effort, the Doug Liman-directed Jumper, leads this week's crop of DVD releases. Also debuting are the Morgan Freeman/Jack Nicholson old guy comedy The Bucket List; Larry the Cable Guy's wacky comedy Witless Protection; the Scarlett Johansson/Natalie Portman corset-fest The Other Boleyn Girl; Zak Penn's ensemble poker comedy The Grand; and German director Michael Haneke's American remake of his relentlessly disturbing horror flick Funny Games.
Our DVD pick for the week is the fully restored Collector's Edition of the old-fashioned epic Lawrence of Arabia. Pick it up and witness pre-CGI filmmaking at its finest.
Ironic Will Ferrell Sports Comedy™ Semi-Pro led a lackluster weekend at the box office with a modest $15.2 million tally, narrowly avoiding a potentially embarrassing defeat to action thriller Vantage Point, which earned $13 million in its second week of release. Taking third place with an $8.8 million gross was The Spiderwick Chronicles, followed by the Natalie Portman/Scarlett Johansson tag-team period drama The Other Boleyn Girl at $8.3 million. Rounding out the top five was Hayden Christensen's teleportastic Jumper, which took in $7.6 million.
Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana steam it up Medieval style in a love triangle centering around King Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl.
The reality that Henry had something going with both Boleyn sisters is definitely an juicy piece of history that is often overlooked, but does this romantic drama have anything more to it than Hollywood's pretty faces dropping corset?
