The first DVD Tuesday of 2008 is a relatively tame one, with Milla Jovovich's videogame sequel Resident Evil: Extinction leading a pack of new releases that includes the Jason Statham/Jet Li action duel WAR and Jon Voight's controversial Mormon massacre flick September Dawn.
Our pick for this week is the over-the-top action thriller Shoot 'Em Up, starring Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti. Check out our review. Posted 01.01.08 by reelz
The summer of the three-quel had its last gasp this weekend, as the third-in-the-series Resident Evil: Extinction won the box office with $24 million in receipts. The Jessica Alba-Dane Cook romantic comedy, Good Luck Chuck, came in second with $14 million.
But the independent films are singing a small but mighty song of their own, as well. Several had strong expansions: David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises catapulted into fifth place with $5.7 million - earning a $4,000/theater average, Across the Universe climbed to 13th place with a $7,000/theater average and In the Valley of Elah hit 17th place with a $4,000/theater average.
And although Into the Wild and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford both did very limited opens this week, they clearly filled their houses--earning a $51,700/theater average and $28,800/theater average respectively. Posted 09.23.07 by reelz
Hollywood's annual awards season may have begun, but don't expect this weekend's two biggest releases, Good Luck Chuck and Resident Evil: Extinction, to be on any critics' top ten lists.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
Good Luck Chuck
"Positively awful." [Full Review]
Resident Evil: Extinction
"A vast improvement over its predecessor, Resident Evil Apocalypse, in that it is actually watchable." [Full Review]
Also opening: Sydney White, Into the Wild, The Jane Austen Book Club and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Posted 09.21.07 by reelz
She's worked as a model, an actress and a singer, but what multi-talented (if you can call modelling a talent) Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich really wants to do is...make infomercials?
"I love infomercials," Jovovich revealed in an interview promoting Resident Evil: Extinction at Comic-Con. "I've always thought that I could do a really good infomercial, because I have a lot of really great ideas for things. I just never actually have the time to patent them."
After the critically-drubbed Resident Evil: Apocalypse, she might want to consider filling out a few of those patent applications. Jovovich assures us, however, that Extinction will be vastly superior to Apocalypse. "Everything about this film is so much tighter and more together," she raved. "The script is so much better and the idea is so much more precise. We've got these really great storylines going...it's rad!"
Let's hope so. Resident Evil: Extinction opens nationwide on September 21st. Posted 07.31.07 by reelz
