In the first Iron Man movie, director Jon Favreau delivered a classic "hero's journey" story with the self-centered military-industrial capitalist billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), when faced with his own mortality and the consequences of his company's actions, transforming into a globablly minded, altruistic force for good. In a recent interview with MTV, Downey, Jr. explained how the theme of Iron Man 2, which opens this week, has grown to encompass more than just Stark, the man, but the Stark name and its place in the past, present, and future of the "shared universe" that Marvel Studios is crafting.

Director Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 is poised to open in the US this week, but it has already taken in over a $100 million at foreign box offices, opening in advance of the US release to give it more screen time before the World Cup begins. Still, despite its strong international opening and generally positive early reviews, Paramount and Marvel Studios are making one last promotional push for the movie, releasing new stills, launching a viral marketing mystery and adding interactive content to the official Iron Man 2 web-site. The red carpet premiere of Paramount and Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated sequel to Iron Man was held in Los Angeles on Monday and the stars turned out looking their best. To coincide with the premiere, Paramount has released a series of video interviews with several of the cast members, including title star Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and newcomers Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle.

Academy-award winner Gwyneth Paltrow made an unusual career move when she signed up for Iron Man in the role of Pepper Potts, the assistant to Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr. ). Iron Man 2 sees her back in the role of Pepper, and Paltrow told The Inquirer that the sequel was a different experience, considering she agreed to do the first Iron Man without ever reading the script.

In advance of the official Iron Man 2 press junket taking place today in Los Angeles, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios have released a batch of new promotional materials for the movie. The latest releases include a slightly naughty new 38-second clip from the movie, two new posters and an ET exclusive focusing on the newest superhero on the block—and Marvel Studios' first female superhero—the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

With the exception of the end-of-credits scene in Iron Man in which Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) approaches Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about the Avengers Initiative, the only scene in the movie that hinted at what fans might have in store for them in Iron Man 2 was the one in which James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Terrence Howard) glances at Stark's old suit of armor and says, "Next time, baby." Now, we know that Rhodey (Don Cheadle replacing Howard) plays a central role in the sequel as War Machine, an armored hero with an over-the-top arsenal of weapons, adding a dual meaning to the title of the movie. In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, director Jon Favreau said that the addition of War Machine was an obvious way to double the excitement of the original movie.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios continue their relentless promotional campaign for director Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. Recent releases include two selections of never-before-seen still images from the movie—one set released via BSC and another set via French site Les Héros de l'Ecran—as well as a new TV spot that includes more footage of the Monaco battle between Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in his portable, lightweight armor.

Entertainment Tonight has just released online an exclusive video from the set of Iron Man 2 that includes nearly a minute of never-before-seen footage from the movie. The video focuses on the simmering-under-the-surface relationship between Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) and his professional assistant and confidante, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and includes interview snippets with Downey, Jr., Paltrow and director Jon Favreau.
