Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have enjoyed a long and successful partnership over the years, dating all the way back to 1990's Edward Scissorhands. Their latest collaboration, Sweeney Todd, arrives in theaters just before Christmas, and the interweb is all abuzz over the recently-released trailer.
I understand why Burton would want to work with such a talented and versatile actor as Depp, but why does he insist on having Johnny wear Kabuki makeup in all of their films? Check out the evidence and see for yourself:
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Ed Wood (1994)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Kabuki (c. 16th Century)

The trailer for Sweeney Todd hit the Interweb this week and potential fans are buzzing. It looks looks like the perfect storm to us - who can think of a better combination than Tim Burton's vision of Johnny Depp as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street?
But we did notice that there isn't a lot of singing in this trailer. And Sweeney Todd is a musical. We're hoping the light-going on the music isn't a sign they're hiding something. Cross your fingers, or the barber will cut them off!
Oh, and notice--is that a little Sacha Baron Cohen we see snuck in there?

Tim Burton's film adaptaion of Sweeney Todd has gotten its release date, and it's a doozy. Johnny Depp's version of the bloody barber of Fleet Street will head into theaters on December 21--just in time for the Christmas movie audiences.
The movie musical was originally slated for a "platform" strategy, opening in limited release in December and then going wide in January, but DreamWorks execs think that Depp's character might have the same brandability and appeal as his character Captain Jack Sparrow did in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
That's saying a lot for someone whose main activity is slashing throats with his shaving razor.
