Which of this year's movies deserve the industry’s highest honor?
This has been an incredible year for movie lovers, especially fans of genre movies. There were fewer superheroes on the big screen, but they ruled the box office, nonetheless, with smartly written, ingeniously directed and just plain fun comic book adaptations coming in first, second, and fifth on the list of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Sci-fi fans were made to suffer through a couple of early duds, but had their patience rewarded with the return of some classic characters and one of the most influential directors to work in the genre after a thirty-year hiatus. Fantasy fans got to choose between whimsical and warrior Snow Whites, and the world's most popular vampire couple had a baby, not to mention that the greatest high fantasy franchise of all time returns to theaters this month after a decade slumbering in the Shire. (Horror fans got the short end of the stake stick this year, with too many sequels and not enough original content.)
Women continued to assert themselves in 2012, with more female-driven comedies getting laughs for the kinds of jokes once reserved for men, and the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director is almost a sure thing for another nomination. Independent studios also made a splash this year, turning out several engaging, moving, and downright brilliant dramas that are every bit as good as the big studio dramas with A-list directors.
Which movies were the best? Which ones deserve the honor of being nominated for the movie industry's top prize? That's up to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to decide, but we want to know what you think. What's often forgotten or given little recognition in the wake of his untimely passing on Wednesday is Steve Jobs' influence on the development of computer-animated movies. Before his return to Apple in 1996 and his championing of devices such as the iPod, iPhone, and iMac, Jobs made an astute purchase from moviemaker George Lucas of a struggling graphics company. His drive and commitment to a fledgling project at Pixar eventually realized itself as Toy Story, the first computer-animated feature-length movie ever produced.
Widely regarded as "one of the greatest and most revolutionary films in the history of animation," Toy Story has become the touchstone of the Pixar brand that has gone on to create such award-winning and commercially successful movies as Wall-E, Up, and Finding Nemo. Eventually, Disney bought Pixar in 2006 for $7.6 billion, naming Steve Jobs to the board of directors and leaving him the single largest individual shareholder in the company (7%).

No surprise, we love the Oscars. But ... well, even we have to admit that the show always goes on too long and you can really only count on one good joke per hour. Enter our annual Oscar Bingo Cards, a sure way to get you through the duller moments. Or to help ignore that blowhard at the party who you know only saw Iron Man 2 and Inception, yet somehow has an opinion on every award.
This year we've put together a set of 10 Cards — one for each of the movies up for Best Picture. (Hint: Check out the FREE SPACE icons.) Early next Tuesday morning — 5:30 AM ET on January 25 — the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the nominees for its 83rd annual awards. If you don't plan to be up at that time, we'll have a complete list posted shortly after the announcement on our site.
Who will make the Academy's cut. We bravely posted our predictions for the 10 Best Picture nominees back in November. Today, our Richard Roeper weighs in with his movie predictions, as well as those for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director.

Tonight, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hosted the 68th Annual Golden Globes. The big award winners were Glee and Boardwalk Empire on the television side; The Social Network, The Kids Are All Right, and The Fighter on the big screen. Robert De Niro received the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Pixar is coming off it's best year after the powerhouse animation studio released its highest grossing flick ever - Toy Story 3, which is a remarkable feat given the studio's blockbuster streak (Pixar's average box-office gross is $258 million!).
In addition to possible Oscar nominations for Toy Story 3, which was a fan and critic favorite, the studio is getting some accolades from outside Hollywood.
