"I drink your milkshake!"
After winning a record third Oscar for Best Actor at the 85th Academy Awards for his performance in Lincoln, English-Irish actor Daniel Day-Lewis is being heralded by many as "our greatest living actor," with some even crowning him "the greatest actor of all time." In his acceptance speech, Day-Lewis humbly said that he didn't "know how any of this happened" to him, and that he "received more" than his "fair share of good fortune." Maybe so, but Day-Lewis is also an incredibly dedicated method actor who conducts vast amounts of research for every role he takes on and often lives his day-to-day life as the character he is portraying while a film is in production.
Day-Lewis' intense commitment to his craft has jeopardized his health on more than one occasion — he broke two ribs from remaining hunched over in a wheelchair all during the filming of My Left Foot and initially refused treatment for a case of pneumonia while filming Gangs of New York because it wasn't in keeping with the time period. This type of behavior sometimes earned the actor the enmity of his fellow cast and crew members, but the result is a body of work that is second-to-none. Lincoln was his latest achievement in acting, but was it Day-Lewis' best? Help us rank the movies of the most celebrated actor of our day.

It's been two years since There Will Be Blood, and although Paul Thomas Anderson had been turning out movies with Kubrick-like slowness, he already has the idea for his next project. The movie will star Philip Seymour Hoffman as the charismatic leader of a cult-like religion that some say points to Scientology.
Few other details were released, but The Playlist caught sight of The Cinematic Experience of Forizzer blog, whose author claims to have read the script. He then follows with what he claims is a full-length synopsis and review.
Here's the condensed version from The Playlist:
According to the review (and much like the original synopsis), the film focuses on a guy in his '20s called Freddie, who leaves the Navy after his appendix bursts. He swiftly becomes an alcoholic, and begins brewing his own beer, but when it almost kills an immigrant worker, he runs away to sea again, and falls under the spell of a man known as "Master" (Hoffman's character), a family man who is also the leader of his own religion.
Then the Forizzer author's impressions:
The script was mashed together rather haphazardly ... Poorly written, but excellently constructed, Untitled Scientology is one of the better scripts I've ever read ... It isn't what you'd expect a film to be about when “the origins of Scientology” are in the cards, so I applaud Anderson for making this grander than the cinematic cheap shot one would anticipate. It's more Punch Drunk Love than anything else as he utilizes a distinct mood to drive an age old theme.
It's hard to know whether this guy is for real, but he certainly does outline extensive details. But even if he did read an authentic script, it has to be in its early stages, which could mean drastic changes for the final version.
In any case, it's been a while since we've heard any news from P.T. Anderson; and since he crafted what some consider the best comedy and the best drama of the aughties (Punch Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood), we're anxious to learn more about what he's up to next.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association cast its votes for the best movies of the "aughties," and in the end, it was David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. that came out on top, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The organization made the following statement in announcing its decision:
Lynch's film stands as both a cautionary tale and a mascot for the triumph ofart and personal vision in an industry that, from where we sit, often seems actively devoted to the suppression of both.
Mulholland Dr. stars Laura Elena Harring as an upscale LA woman who suffers from amnesia after a car accident. She meets Naomi Watts (in her breakout role), an ingenue trying to break into Hollywood, and the two set about trying to solve the mystery of the accident. The movie also features Justin Theroux as a director whose project is sabotaged by big-studio producers.
The movie both glamorizes and satirizes Hollywood, often in the same moment, and the tone runs the gamut from absurd hilarity to outright horror. It's a rhapsodic celebration of the history of movies on one hand, and yet at the same time a ruthlessly bitter denunciation of industry evils. Perfect territory for Lynch, whose very success depended partly on Hollywood capital and partly on his ability to keep his distance from it.
Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood was second on the critics' list, followed by Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of theSpotless Mind and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain. Other contenders included Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, and Alfonso Cuarón's Y tu mamá también.

Reilly plays a rags-to-riches rock star in the biopic parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story; Samuel L. Backstage in the Academy press room, Daniel Day-Lewis is discussing his Oscar® win for Best Actor in There Will Be Blood.
The quote from Blood "I drink your milkshake. I drink it up." has already become legendary, parodied on TV shows, websites and even on last night's Saturday Night Live.
The first question from press backstage was whether he is being offered many free milkshakes. The often serious Day-Lewis chuckled in response. "I'm very much looking forward to all the milkshakes I can drink for the next 25 years or so... "I am completely aware of [all the parodies and references to the quote]. I think it's fantastic."
When asked a semi-personal question about his own interests, Day-Lewis responded with a grin: "I'm not telling you... because it's none of your f***ing business."

There's an interesting trend occuring this Holiday season at the movie house - instead of the usual heartwarming, happy holiday fare, many moviegoers are opting for a distinctly different experience at the cinema... Blood Shed.
Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem debuted on Christmas Day and rounded up an impressive $9.5 on Day 1. Our own Brent Simon was a bit underwhelmed - be sure to check out his Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem review. The post-apocalyptic I Am Legend is holding strong, on pace to hit $175 million in total box office this weekend while Tim Burton's blood-soaked Sweeney Todd is also continuing to perform well at the box office.
Finally, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, the darkly operatic There Will Be Blood opened in very limited release this week, garnering a staggering per-screen average of nearly $34,000.

The powers of Palm Springs have announced that they will be honoring Daniel Day-Lewis at the 19th annual Palm Springs Film Festival next month.
Day-Lewis will be receiving the Desert Palm Achievement award for his work in the upcoming There Will Be Blood, which has been getting a lot of awards buzz. Perhaps this will tip him over the edge for a Best Actor nod?
