Multiple Oscar-nominated legal drama Michael Clayton, starring George Clooney and Tilda Swinton, leads this week's impressive crop of new releases. Also arriving on DVD are Noah Baumbach's dysfunctional dramedy Margot at the Wedding, Ang Lee's saucy Lust, Caution, Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron's somber Iraq drama In the Valley of Elah and Reese Witherspoon's political drama Rendition.
Our pick for the week is American Gangster, which inexplicably managed to score only two Academy Award nominations, for Best Art Direction and Best Supporting Actress (Ruby Dee). Go figure. Posted 02.19.08 by reelz
Old English epic Beowulf and comic fantasy Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium square off at the Cineplex this weekend. Also opening are the Gabriel Garcia Marquez adaptation Love in the Time of Cholera and Brian de Palma's Iraq war rant Redacted.
A rundown of our reviews of this weekend's new releases:
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
"Plays like some meandering, bastard love child of Toys, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland." [Full Review]
"The coolest-looking videogame I've ever seen...entertaining in spurts but ultimately soulless." [Full Review]
Love in the Time of Cholera
"A hodge-podge of histrionic, ridiculous scenes cobbled together with no build up...an utter disappointment." [Full Review]
"Some may find this movie heavy-handed in its depiction of the war, but for me it was finally an Iraq War movie done right." [Full Review]
Margot at the Wedding
"Noah Baumbach is an absolute master of the indie genre...no one does bad parent movies better." [Full Review]

The 34th Telluride Film Festival kicks off today with the world premiere of I'm Not There, Todd Haynes' star-studded tribute to Bob Dylan. The quirky biopic features Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Julianne Moore and other heavyweights providing their own impersonations of the scruffy, often incomprehensible folk legend.
Other films on the fest's slate include Oscar contenders Into the Wild, Margot at the Wedding and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Telluride will also be paying tribute to ReelzChannel's own Leonard Maltin. The legendary critic and Secret's Out host will be presented the Medallion Award, honoring "passionate heroes of cinema." Congrats Leonard!
