The Marvel movie rumor mill is cranking out more intriguing "news." On the heels of the rumor that the X-Men: First Class sequel will be based on the "Days of Future Past" storyline, comes the rumor that another comic book Avenger is going to get his own movie: Black Panther.
The source of the rumor is Latino Review, which claims that four different sources have revealed that T'Challa, aka the Black Panther, will be the next character to get his own movie. Marvel already has a 2014 release date scheduled but hasn't yet announced what project will fill that date. (Captain America 2 is scheduled for April 4, 2014.) Documentarian Mark Bailey was hired to write the movie's screenplay early last year and the report claims that the script is "awesome."

Marvel Entertainment and Disney are getting close to announcing the next chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While 2012 will only see the release of The Avengers, Marvel has already planned two movies for 2013: Iron Man 3 (opening May 3) and Thor 2 (opening July 26). 2014 will also have two releases from the comic book company, though which ones is still a secret.
Box Office Mojo reports that two mystery projects will open in 2014, with "Marvel Untitled 1" will open on May 16, 2014, while "Marvel Untitled 2" will open June 27, 2014. No details on which movies they might be, though there are a few obvious possibilities.

Marvel has been flirting with an adaptation of The Black Panther for what seems like an eternity at this point. Wesley Snipes was attached to an adaptation as late as 2006, but the movie never happened. Director John Singleton was brought in to helm Black Panther in 2007 and suggested British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor for the role. G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra's Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has discussed negotiating for the role in both 2009 and 2010, with no luck.
Marvel president Kevin Feige mentioned during last year's Comic-Con that The Black Panther was one of several projects being considered for the future, and finally the project is looking like it is getting closer to becoming a reality.

After telling io9 that he would be interested in playing Marvel's African superhero king, T'Challa, aka the Black Panther, in a live-action role, numerous comic book- and movie-themed sites starved for any news about comic book movie adaptations began to run articles saying that actor Djimon Hounsou was pursuing the part in The Black Panther movie, which at this time is only being considered by Marvel and is not a greenlit production. In a recent interview with MovieWeb to promote his new movie, Julie Taymor's The Tempest, Hounsou, who gave voice to the character in BET's short-lived The Black Panther animated series, said that he was "a little bit floored" by the rumors of a Black Panther movie that sprang up after his statements to io9 and attempted to set the record straight about his knowledge of Marvel's plans for the character.

During this year's Comic-Con, Marvel president Kevin Feige mentioned The Black Panther as one of several possible adaptations that could fill Marvel's post-Avengers slate. A movie adaptation was rumored as early as 1992, with Wesley Snipes hoping to play the role and, in 2007, director John Singleton was reportedly attached to the project, but a Black Panther movie has yet to be made. Created in 1966, the Black Panther was Marvel's first black superhero. The character became a member of The Avengers in 1968.
Actor Djimon Hounsou provided the voice for the character in an animated series earlier this year, and told io9 that he'd like to play the character in a live-action, stand alone movie.

British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, best known to American audiences as Mr. Eko from the TV show Lost, has been trying to break into more mainstream movies with roles in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and the upcoming Faster and The Thing Prequel. It's the superhero genre that Akinnuoye-Agbaje is really hoping to break into, revealing at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con that he was negotiating for the lead role in a Black Panther adaptation. While no official casting was announced, Akinnuoye-Agbaje spoke to ScreenRant at the 2010 New York Comic-Con and continued to campaign for the title role.

With The Avengers formally announced and Joss Whedon officially on board as director, Marvel Studios can now concentrate on the future. Marvel Entertainment struck gold with 2008's Iron Man, even though the character initially lacked the same popularity as other Spider-Man or Wolverine. With Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America slated for the summer of 2011, and The Avengers following in 2012, Marvel has a busy couple years ahead of them, and has no plans of stopping.
In April, a report stated that Marvel and parent company Disney were planning movies for their secondary, less recognizable characters in the lower-budget (for Hollywood, anyway) range of $20-40 million dollars to be shot post-Avengers. Marvel may be altering that plan with another strategy.

Marvel has a pretty full slate of movies up until May 4, 2012, when The Avengers opens in theaters. One of the pics will likely be Ant-Man, the adaptation that writer/director Edgar Wright said he hoped to return to after he finishes his upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. In an interview with ComingSoon, Marvel president Kevin Feige confirmed Wright's plans to make Ant-Man.

Marvel Entertainment has an impressive slate of upcoming movies, with Iron Man 2 opening in 2010, Thor and First Avenger: Captain America in 2011, and The Avengers in 2012. But what movies will Marvel make after that? MTV asked Stan Lee, the 87-year-old co-creator of the comic books, which characters will be next to receive their own movie.
The funny thing is, I think all of them will come to the screen sooner or later because they're always looking for new properties, and Marvel has more than anybody. Doctor Strange I'm sure will be out. You probably know they're working on Ant-Man now. Every one of the Marvel characters, there's somebody working on it. Somebody is trying to put together a story that will work. It's just a matter of time — they can only do so many a year. You don't want to flood the market.
I'm sure [they'll do] The Black Panther, eventually. If they ever want to do a war story, we have Sgt. Fury. We already have Colonel Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. who pops up in so many of these. In fact, there might one day be a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie. It's just a matter of them sitting down and saying, "What haven't we done yet?"
This has got to be good news for Marvel fans, with every single character getting his own movie. With that output, it looks like a pretty wise, albeit expensive, move for Disney to have purchased Marvel.
