With his recent success in Warrior and the highly anticipated remake of The Great Gatsby in the making, Joel Edgerton can now add screenwriting to his list of accomplishments. Edgerton just sold a spec script (One Night Stand) to New Regency.
The movie is said to be a realistic drama following a man and woman after a one night stand, with some necessary comic relief. Although there is no talk of Edgerton himself starring in the movie, he plans to be the executive producer.
Besides Warrior, Edgerton also starred in the horror mystery The Thing in 2011 and just completed The Odd Life of Timothy Green alongside Jennifer Garner.

The past few weeks have been very kind to those anxiously awaiting Universal's upcoming The Thing, as they have been treated to several preview clips, a red band trailer, and an international trailer.
Set in the Norwegian camp that was investigated by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing, the prequel is giving fans another opportunity to get quick look at the new movie. This new featurette which answers one of the most critical questions fans have of the prequel: how closely will it adhere to Carpenter's flick?
According to executive producer J. Miles Dale, there was a lot of "reverse-engineering" involved in making the latest Thing match its predecessor.

With less than two weeks before the release of Universal's upcoming The Thing, the marketing for the prequel is clicking into higher gear with the release of both a red band trailer and a preview clip towards the end of last month. Now, another two preview clips and an international trailer have been released, offering more looks into the prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 horror classic, also titled The Thing.
Set in the Norwegian camp that was investigated by Kurt Russell in the early goings of Carpenter's flick, The Thing (prequel) explains how the devastation they found occurred. Last week's preview clip showed that trust was as much an issue in the prequel as it was in the previous movie, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), who plays American paleontologist Kate Lloyd, trying to figure out who she and her international crew can trust. One of the latest clips takes place before that, showing Winstead bringing evidence that the creature they have discovered can replicate human beings.

The problem with creating a prequel to a well-known and beloved movie, is that said prequel will always be compared to the movie that came before it. And when it comes to Universal's upcoming The Thing, the movie may also be adhering too closely to John Carpenter's 1982 classic The Thing — for instance, both movies have the exact same name.
The story for The Thing (prequel) is taken directly from an early sequence in Carpenter's version, when Kurt Russell and a few others investigate a nearby Norwegian camp that have discovered the alien creature frozen in the ice. The prequel tries to fill in the blanks of what happened at the Norwegian camp, which also includes English speaking characters played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje amongst the Norwegian scientists.
Another infamous sequence from Carpenter's version involved Russell taking the camp hostage with a flamethrower after the others question whether he is a creature or not. A similar, trust-questioning scene is depicted in the latest preview clip from The Thing (prequel), with Winstead trying to make sense of who can be trusted amongst the American and Norwegian crew members.

It often seems like movie theaters are filled with an endless barrage of prequels, sequels or remakes, and, on the surface, the upcoming The Thing may seem like just a way to capitalize on the loyal following of John Carpenter's 1982 classic The Thing, mainly because the two movies share the exact same name.
Australian actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior) plays American helicopter pilot Sam Carter in The Thing prequel, and revealed in an interview with Collider that he only decided to make the movie was because it was not a remake but rather a "pretty genius" idea for a prequel.
I’m pretty skeptical about Hollywood and its fascination with the sequel and the franchise. It’s a zone we seem to be in, at the moment. It’s definitely a slightly nerve-wracking thing to get involved with. I don’t think I would have done it, if it was a remake because I personally believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But, the whole reason these guys had for doing a prequel was pretty genius, when you look at the Carpenter movie. It’s like it was served up on a plate by Carpenter, back in '82, with this whole mystery of what happened at the Norwegian camp. What (prequel director) Matthijs [van Heijningen Jr.] and Universal did was open up a lovely chapter that you wish had been told.

The shapeshifting alien in John Carpenter's The Thing is easily one of the most terrifying monsters in cinematic history — we get goosebumps just thinking about the scene where the infected Norris' (Charles Hallahan) head tears itself apart from the body, sprouts spider-like legs, and skitters away — and it was created by creature designer Rob Bottin well before the advent of CGI technology. In fact, the "thing" in The Thing has become such an iconic creature that producers Marc Abraham and Eric Newman made the decision to use as many practical effects as possible when depicting the creature in the upcoming The Thing prequel.
We only get to see a few glimpses of the creature in the trailer and TV spot that recently began airing, but some close-up shots of the creepy critter appeared in a recent article in Make-Up Artist Magazine (via director Matthijs van Heijningen's Facebook page). The article also contained a brief interview with Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr. of Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., creators of the make-up effects that brought the new "thing" to life, as well as with Linda Dowds, make-up department head of the production.

The onset of fall marks the official end of the action/adventure-heavy Summer Movie Season and the arrival of more and more horror movies in theaters in the weeks leading up to Halloween. One that we are especially looking forward to is director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.'s The Thing, a prequel to John Carpenter's terrifying 1982 movie of the same name. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton, the prequel reveals the discovery of the alien spacecraft and the frozen E.B.E. (Extraterrestrial Biological Entity) that caused so much trouble for Kurt Russell and co. in the original. With the recent airing of the first TV spot for Heijningen's prequel, we wanted to see how it stacks up against the spot for Carpenter's original. Which one's better?

Universal Pictures has released the first preview clip for their upcoming horror movie, The Thing. If you're aware of John Carpenter's 1982 movie of the same name, that might seem confusing, but the upcoming The Thing is a prequel to Carpenter's The Thing. Glad we could clear that up for you.
The prequel follows the Norwegian scientific team that was briefly revealed in Carpenter's version. The group discovers an alien spacecraft and an extraterrestrial frozen in ice that eventually thaws and turns out to be very unfriendly. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) plays an American paleontologist named Kate Lloyd that joins the Norwegian team after the discovery is made. In an interview with MTV, Winstead admitted that there "was definitely a lot of pressure" in making a prequel to Carpenter's well-respected and beloved movie, but that director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. was able to bring "a whole other level of paranoia" to the movie.

Just days after revealing the first poster for The Thing, Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the imaginatively-titled prequel to director John Carpenter's 1982 movie of the same name.
Ultimately based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella Who Goes There?, the story involves a scientific team discovering an alien spacecraft and an extraterrestrial frozen in ice. When the ice unexpectedly thaws, the team is in for a surprise when the alien revives and slowly begins assuming the body and personality of several team members. The story was originally adapted into the 1951 classic The Thing from Another World and remade by Carpenter 30 years later.
