When the original cast of ZackSnyder's Watchmen follow-up Sucker Punch was announced it looked like a powerhouse cast of young starlets, from indie darlings Evan Rachel Wood and Abbie Cornish, to teenage movie stars Emma Stone and Vanessa Hudgens, all surrounding lead Amanda Seyfried, who was fresh from the box office success of Mamma Mia. Then things changed. First Seyfried departed and was replaced by The Uninvited's Emily Browning, and now Stone and Wood have left due to "scheduling conflicts" and have been replaced by Dragonball Evolution's Jamie Chung and Jena Malone (Pride & Prejudice). Still a talented cast, just not quite the same box office cache.
Malone will play Cornish's younger sister, while Chung will play a big-hearted country girl. Both characters will still be inmates in a mental institution in the 1950's in what is described as a "all-female action fantasy."

If you're a fan of musical theatre or novelty wedding dances and are possessed by a burning desire to embarrass yourself in public, have we got a promotion for you! In celebration of the DVD and Blu-ray releases of the hit movie musical Mamma Mia!, Universal is making a bid to form the world's largest conga line.
You can join in the fun over at mammamiacongaline.com. Just be careful: A similar stunt was attempted in 1991, when producers of Kid 'n Play's House Party 2 staged a massive public rendition of the Running Man, featuring dancers on all seven continents. All seemed fine until several overzealous members of the Antarctica contingent slipped on the icy surface and broke their necks. To this day, neither Kid nor Play are allowed to set foot on the continent.
Consider yourself warned. Posted 12.18.08 by reelz
The Winner Takes It All; Money, Money, Money -- there's no shortage of puns to describe Mamma Mia! The Movie's blockbuster week. The Golden Globe-nominated comedy is now the "most successful movie musical of all time worldwide."
On the first day of sales, DVD purchases topped 2.25 million, which translates into nearly $40 million in gross revenues. Also on Tuesday, news broke that Mamma Mia! capsized the UK box-office sales record that was held for nearly a decade by Titanic.
Our best guess for this phenomenal success? That the world is in need of some unbridled cheer right now -- not that Pierce Brosnan's singing is bringing the fans in droves. Posted 12.18.08 by reelz
Still looking for a gift for the musical theatre fan in your household? You're in luck: Mamma Mia!, the blockbuster adaptation of the ABBA-themed Broadway hit, arrives on DVD and Blu-ray today. Pick up a copy and witness the humiliating depths to which Pierce Brosnan has fallen in his post-Bond career. Take heed, Daniel Craig.
Also debuting on today: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third -- and hopefully final -- chapter of Brendan Fraser's Indy-lite action franchise; The House Bunny, starring the perpetually underrated Anna Faris; and Don Cheadle's uneven political thriller Traitor. Posted 12.16.08 by reelz
Mamma Mia!'s comely AmandaSeyfried has signed on to star in Dear John, the big-screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, Varietyreports. Sparks, you may recall, is the
scourge author responsible for the manipulative tearjerker The Notebook and the upcoming Richard Gere-Diane Lane drama Nightsin Rodanthe (which, admittedly, I've yet to see -- however, the poster alone is enough to inspire instant weeping). Lasse Hallstrom is slated to direct.
According to Variety, Seyfried will play "a young woman who meets and falls in love with a soldier while he's on leave." The soldier will be played by Hollywood's go-to military man Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Stop-Loss).

Mamma Mia! sing-alongs were offered up in 299 theaters across the nation this Labor Day weekend, resulting in a two percent bump in ticket sales on Mamma's seventh weekend of release. The pic earned $5.8 million in toll this weekend for eighth place on the Box Office charts.
New Line tried a similar approach last summer with Hairspray, but the results weren't nearly as successful.
Never underestimate the karaoke power of Abba. Perhaps the success will lead to some midnight competition for long-running sing-along success The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

You've probably already heard that The Dark Knight toppled Spider Man 3's 3-day opening weekend record with $155 million this weekend. But when you combine that total with Mama Mia's $27.6 million and the continued success of movies like Hancock, WALL-E, Wanted and Get Smart, you have the largest combined 3-day box office take in motion picture history. Final numbers with new record toll will be out tomorrow.

Move over, emo Spidey. According to Boxofficemojo.com, The Dark Knight is on pace to earn over $155 million this weekend, shattering the previous three-day record of $151 million set last year by Spider-Man 3. Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated sequel to Batman Begins opened in over 4300 theaters -- many of them selling out well before the movie's midnight debut on Friday.
Coming in a distant second place at the box office -- and destined to become the answer to a trivia question -- was the ABBA musical Mamma Mia!, which earned a respectable $27.6 million in its opening weekend.
The Dark Knight's next -- and likely unattainable -- milestone is the all-time domestic box office record of $600 million, set by Titanic in 1997.
