According to genre lore, a mummy is a creature buried for hundreds of years before being discovered in modern times, where it starts chasing after the people who found it. In Hollywood, the mummy only has to be buried for around 5 years before being unearthed.
Still focused on making franchises out of its classic movie monster characters, Universal is ready to reboot The Mummy, four years after it completed a trilogy of movies starring Brendan Fraser that started with 1999's The Mummy and ended with 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Variety reports that Universal has hired Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts to pen the reboot for producer Sean Daniel, who worked on the trilogy of Mummy movies as well as Universal's failed 2010 reboot of The Wolfman. "I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before," said Spaihts about The Mummy reboot.
Speaking of The Wolfman, that too has received a reboot, initially titled Werewolf, but was later referred to as Untitled Werewolf Thriller when Universal announced the production start last October. That reboot is expected to go directly to DVD this October. Posted 04.05.12 by Ryan

The blockbuster Mummy franchise is back -- and with a dose of Far East flavor, for good measure -- with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. In the latest action-packed adventure, Brendan Fraser's danger-seeking explorer Rick O'Connell travels to China to take on an undead Han Emperor (played Jet Li) and his massive army of Terra Cotta warriors. Maria Bello, Luke Ford and Michelle Yeoh also star.
