After his wife (Emily Mortimer) plays a prank on him, an efficiency expert (Ryan Reynolds) finds himself subject to the random nature of life.
Movie Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes®
" Reynolds goes through his emotional paces with conviction and is developing a trademark wounded look that is quite effective. "
" The lead performers, the brighter fillips in Daniel Taplitz's screenplay and Marcos Siega's assured direction make this a pleasing item overall. "
" The performances and Marcos Siega's direction put a pleasing sheen on the material. "
" A predictable romantic dramedy that isn't particularly tender, moving or amusing, Chaos Theory suffers first and foremost from featuring the least engaging couple to headline a movie in some time. "
" Chaos Theory lives up, or maybe down, to its title, as it's all over the place. "
" Chaos Theory peddles the usual carpe diem movie bunk. "
" Chaos Theory shows just how crucial casting can be to a movie, especially something as sensitive to nuance, idiosyncrasy and timing as a romantic comedy. "
" Dramatically it's neither fish nor fowl, so you can't quite tell if the sandwich is tuna salad or chicken salad. "
" If actor Ryan Reynolds isn't careful, he's going to parlay his good looks and engaging presence into a full-time job as a game-show host. "
" It's genial enough, but it should be called My First Mid-Life Crisis Movie. "
" It's swift and watchable enough, and the actors keep things interesting, but ultimately the movie falls short. "
" No doubt there's a minute audience who wants to walk out of a Ryan Reynolds movie contemplating the vagaries of life. The rest of us would have settled for a few more laughs. "
" Oh, Ryan Reynolds. We like you. We want to see you succeed. And yet you keep making the wrong choices. "
" Reynolds is more than likable in the lead. "
" Sometimes, Hollywood producers are too myopic to recognize a winner even when they made it. "
" The audience, if any, for Chaos Theory is going to be hit with a little puff of celluloid flatulence. The movie won't linger in the air, but that doesn't make it any less embarrassing. "
" The comic scenes can be arch or shrill, but director Marcos Siega (Pretty Persuasion) does better when the story turns somber and the emotions feel genuine. "
" What emerges is a short movie that feels too long, a heartfelt drama too playful to be sincere, and a narrative touching on adult themes but sabotaged by schematic false notes. "

In Chaos Theory, Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe, Smokin' Aces) stars as fastidious Frank Allen, author of a bestselling book about how to be efficient with your life by doing things like making lists on index cards of everything you want to accomplish with your day. And that strategy works well enough for him until his wife, Susan (Emily Mortimer) accidentally turns the clock backward instead of forward in an effort to give him an extra 10 minutes in a day, setting into place a chain of events that will tear his carefully constructed house of cards down and causing Frank to become unhinged.
Written by Daniel Taplitz (Commandments) and directed by Marcos Siega (Pretty Persuasion), Chaos Theory is a movie with a lot of problems. The sweet Emily Mortimer (Lars and the Real Girl, Match Point) is woefully miscast as the drop-dead amazing woman that all of Frank's friends want, and Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Head in the Clouds) doesn't seem to understand his role is that of the best friend, and continually tries to upstage Reynolds with his cheesy caricature of a slick ladies' man. There's definitely kernel of a good idea in Chaos Theory without question, but that kernel was much better suited to a big romantic comedy with some studio development than to a tiny indie. Instead the good ideas and good lines flounder and drown all the static, the story failing to build to anything worthwhile.
If, like me, you're drawn to this movie by the cute trailer and a love of Reynolds, think again. With his nice guy looks and just-snarky-enough delivery, Reynolds has some funny moments with which he does his best to try to save it things, but no amount of CPR can bring this dead fish of a movie back to life.
