With Piranha 3-D opening this weekend, director Alexandre Aja is already setting up his next project, an adaptation of the Japanese manga comic, Cobra - The Space Pirate by Buichi Terasawa. The comic was eventually turned into a animated series shown on European television, and Aja, who grew up in France, told Deadline that the series was a big part of his childhood.

Director Alexandre Aja has previously insisted that Piranha 3-D is "not a remake" of Joe Dante's 1978 cult classic Piranha, despite similar-sounding plotlines. In a recent interview with New York Magazine, Aja again talked about the differences between his Piranha and that of Dante's original and the sequel (directed by a young James Cameron).
It’s a very strange franchise — so many talented people have been involved. Somehow, it keeps giving a chance to young people who are really, really inventive that can work with a very limited budget. I’m very lucky to put my name among those names. Joe Dante and James Cameron are major inspirations. But my Piranha is not inspired by the original Piranha, it’s more like a Gremlins [directed by Dante] for adults, with some Indiana Jones action-adventure.
So how did Aja get involved with reinvigorating the Piranha franchise? The French director says he was approached about it just after making his horror movie debut with High Tension.

While Elisabeth Shue seems a curious choice to play the lead role in a movie called Piranha 3-D, Ving Rhames is no stranger to fighting unusual opponents. Whether they're weird dudes dressed head-to-toe in leather, or zombie hordes running through a mall, Rhames like to go all medieval on them. In Piranha 3D, Rhames plays the deputy to Shue's sheriff in a lakeside town that comes under attack by a swarm of prehistoric piranha. Rhames described the movie to Black Voices as "fun, scary, [and] entertaining" which was part of the reason he agreed to appear in the movie.

Elisabeth Shue's career has had an interesting trajectory, starting way back in 1984 when audiences (and Ralph Macchio) fell in love with the actress in The Karate Kid. After finding continued success by taking over the role of Michael J. Fox's girlfriend in Back to the Future II and III, Shue landed an Oscar nomination for 1995's Leaving Las Vegas. Instead of appearing in any and every movie she could, Shue prefers to make one a year. "I don't work that often to be honest," Shue told The Independent. "It sort of comes down to really a film a year and then an odd thing here or there that only lasts a few days."
Shue's latest effort, Piranha 3-D, seems like a change in direction, straying from the more independent movies she's been appearing in of late. Shue admits that it was Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja that convinced her to accept the role of Sheriff Julie Forester in the upcoming movie.

Avatar introduced audiences to the transformative nature of 3-D technology and set off a wave of 3-D conversions for most major action and horror movies. While some movies have seen a huge box office boost from the 3-D conversion (Clash of the Titans), others have not (The Last Airbender). Writer/director Eli Roth, who appears in Piranha 3-D as a wet t-shirt emcee, told Bloody-Disgusting that the 3-D conversion was far from an afterthought.

Piranha 3-D is looking to kick start the "3-D horror season" when it opens on August 20. Resident Evil: Afterlife will continue the tradition on September 10 and Saw 3D will close the season on October 29. With the opening just a few weeks away, Dimension has released a new UK quad poster, as well as the first official photo of the movie's razor-toothed creature.

Joe Dante's 1978 cult classic Piranha followed a swarm of genetically mutated piranha that preyed on the guests of a summer resort. The upcoming Piranha 3-D follows Elisabeth Shue as the local sheriff of a lakeside town whose Spring Break turns into a nightmare when an underwater tremor unleashes a horde of prehistoric, man-eating fish. While Piranha 3D certainly sounds like a remake, director Alexandre Aja told Collider that it isn't.

Fans attending this year's Comic-Con in San Diego might be a little disappointed when they try to attend the Piranha 3-D panel. It won't be there.
The New York Times reports that the yearly convention deemed footage from Alexandre Aja's latest horror movie "too graphic" and asked the French director to "tone it down" to the convention's PG-13 level or hold the panel without footage. Aja refused.

The latest poster for French director Alexandre Aja's (Mirrors) new horror movie, Piranha 3-D, draws more than a little inspiration from the classic poster for Steven Spielberg's Jaws. Considering the plot of Piranha 3-D is basically the same as that of Jaws—local sheriff (Elisabeth Shue) defends holiday beach-goers from toothy ocean menace— and Richard Dreyfuss even makes an appearance, the similarity seems appropriate. Ving Rhames and Christopher Lloyd also star.

A couple moves have occurred on the great chessboard that is the upcoming movie schedule. First off, Dimension and the Weinstein Company have decided to move up director Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3-D from August 27 to August 20, shifting it away from horror competitor The Last Exorcism.
Piranha 3-D, a remake of Joe Dante's 1978 original (which was, to put it politely, a "remake" of 1975's Jaws), follows a sleepy lakeside town whose Spring Break suffers a small setback when an underwater tremor unleashes a horde of prehistoric, man-eating fish. Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames play local law enforcement tasked with destroying the menace, while Christopher Lloyd will finally get his chance to play a nutty scientist. Richard Dreyfuss and Jerry O'Connell also star.
