Posted 01.23.12 by Mandy As of this weekend, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 broke the $700M mark at the box office, and it's closing in on New Moon to become the highest grossing pic in the franchise.
Summit and Lionsgate, already busy counting un-hatched chickens, reportedly made the official announcement that Breaking Dawn - Part 1 will have the top spot, even though it still has several million to go to actually pass New Moon which eventually hit $709.8M worldwide. Breaking Dawn has $8.62M to go to catch up.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Breaking Dawn - Part 1 has had the strongest foreign box office sales so far, and has yet to open in Japan and China... though New Moon only hit $1.9M in Japan, so Japan's numbers alone probably won't be enough to close the gap completely.
Whether Breaking Dawn - Part 1 comes out on top or not, it's clear that it's a huge hit, and hopefully that means that the saga will continue.
