It has been revealed that Marvel Studios' most ambitious superhero movie to date, The Avengers, will go into production in February 2011. A "team-up" movie to be written and directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity), The Avengers will feature cast and characters from Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. Joining the heroic alums will be newcomers Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye.

So far, Marvel Studio's plans after The Avengers opens in 2012 includes an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's Runaways, which will start production next year and has started the casting process. Marvel has also hired screenwriters for a Dr. Strange adaptation and mentioned many other comic book titles as potential movie adaptations. While speaking to MTV, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that Marvel is also thinking about a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, the organization that Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, and Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson work for.

Marvel Studios carefully orchestrated its Hall H panel presentation at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, slowly building the excitement for its big reveal of the first fully "assembled" cast of its upcoming super-team movie Avengers. And as if the fans in attendance weren't already hyped up enough by all of the footage and corresponding panel discussions, the surprise appearance of Iron Man himself, Robert Downey, Jr., raised the excitement level of the crowd to a fever pitch. By the time Mark Ruffalo took the stage, revealed as the new Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, for the first time, the applause in Hall H was practically deafening. In a recent interview with TheWrap, Ruffalo reflected on how "crazy" it was to take the stage in front of such a raucous crowd.

Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was one of the most celebrated panels of the convention. Fans in attendance got to see: the first teaser trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger; the first trailer for Thor; and the full cast of The Avengers including Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner / The Hulk) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) "assemble" on stage for the very first time. Leading into the big reveal was this teaser trailer narrated by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, the man behind the scenes of superhuman activities in Marvel's "shared universe" of movies.

Those who attended the San Diego Comic-Con this year and saw the Thor teaser trailer shown at the Marvel panel (or those of you who saw it online before Marvel brought their own hammer down), know that there was still very little revealed about Thor's mischievous half-brother, Loki, played by British actor Tom Hiddleston. Hiddleston spoke about playing the infamous comic book villain to IGN and said he hopes Loki is "a villain that you love to hate, rather than a villain that you just hate." Hiddleston said there's more to being a villain than just being evil.

Marvel made a pretty heavy push to get Mark Ruffalo to sign on to Avengers in time for the San Diego Comic-Con, thereby replacing the incumbent Edward Norton. Avengers director Joss Whedon later admitted that he was "stunned" that they were able to cast Ruffalo, whom he described as his "first and only choice" for the role.
Avengers executive producer Jon Favreau, who has experience replacing an actor in Iron Man 2, called the process "tricky," while Ruffalo revealed to EW that replacing Norton was a little awkward.

When Marvel revealed the "assembled" line-up of the upcoming adaptation of The Avengers, fans may have been too busy seeing recent additions Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner standing amongst Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans to notice the inclusion of Clark Gregg, who plays S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson.
No one is more surprised by his continued association than Gregg, who began his Marvel career in Iron Man as Coulson, a character that doesn't even exist in the comics. Gregg continued in Iron Man 2, including a Easter egg scene after the credits that set-up Gregg's participation in Thor, and will obviously continue with The Avengers. Gregg told Collider that "every time they [Marvel] call, I’m like, 'Really? I get to do this guy again?'" He's also hoping that his relationship with Marvel will eventually include directing.

After Marvel unveiled the cast line-up of their upcoming adaptation of The Avengers, director Joss Whedon announced that the character of Ant-Man would not appear in The Avengers, much to the chagrin of fanboys around the world. While talking to Cinema Blend, writer/director Edgar Wright explained how his script for Ant-Man, makes an appearance in The Avengers impossible.

There were rumblings for some time that actor Edward Norton might be replaced as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, in future Marvel Studios projects, but it still caused a wave of panic among some dedicated fans when it was finally announced that he would not be asked to return. In fact, an Internet petition that sprang up in support of Norton's return generated nearly 10,000 signatures before it was finally announced at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) that Mark Ruffalo would be taking over the role.
Joss Whedon, the writer-director chosen to unite Marvel's movie franchises in the upcoming super-team movie The Avengers, seemed confident in the decision, saying that Ruffalo was his "first and only choice" for the role. Now, fellow Marvel Studios director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) has weighed in on the change in Hulks, telling IGN that "it's tricky" from a practical standpoint to change actors in major movie franchises.

While comic book movies are notorious for having casting rumors, some rumors just won't die. Eva Longoria Parker has been the subject rumors ever since she was photographed leaving Marvel Studios holding on to some Avengers comics, leading to speculation that she would be cast as Janet Van Dyne, a.k.a. Avengers founding member The Wasp, in the upcoming adaptation of The Avengers. Longoria Parker denied the rumor over a year and a half ago, but the rumors are back, with Showbiz Spy reporting that sources claim the Desperate Housewives actress is "in negotiations" for the role. The LA Times called Longoria Parker to get her side of the story.
