Over the summer, Twentieth Century Fox's comic book adaptation of X-Men: First Class scored $335 million in worldwide box office as well as critical acclaim on its way to becoming one of the bigger comic book movie hits of the summer. A sequel seemed inevitable, but inevitable can be a long time coming. Reports that First Class producer Simon Kinberg, who also wrote 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, was going to write an initial draft for a sequel is the closest Fox has come to an official announcement.
That hasn't stopped First Class' stars from preparing for another installment. Both James McAvoy, who played Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, and Michael Fassbender, who played Erik Lensherr, a.k.a. Magneto, have separately discussed their desire to return. McAvoy admitted in November that he's actually contractually obligated to return, saying: "if Fox decides we're doing it, then I don't have a choice." Now, Fassbender has echoed McAvoy's comments while speaking to SuperHeroHype, agreeing that he "has no choice" in appearing in a potential First Class sequel, but also declaring his belief that one will be made.

MovieMistakes.com has just released the best movie mistakes of 2011, and one thing is clear from this list: This was the year of the script supervisor. The mistakes mentioned on the list are insignificant at best, proving that people are working hard in Hollywood keeping movie continuity tight.
While there are a few "real" mistakes, such as fallen items magically righting themselves, and Canadian maps that were supposed to be from the mid-twentieth century showing territories that did not exist until the 1990s, they are minor. Indeed most of the mistakes on the list don't seem like mistakes at all.
For example, number two on the list concerns Professor X and his disability. This summer's X-Men: First Class had the professor confined to a wheelchair in 1962, though a previous X-Men movie had him walking around well into the 1970s. This is not exactly a mistake. First Class was considered to be a reboot, not a prequel. Those sort of story changes happen in reboots. Similarly, Spock and Uhura kissing in the 2009 Star Trek wasn't a mistake made by someone unfamiliar with the franchise.

As summers go, Twentieth Century Fox had a pretty good one, releasing two hit comic book movie prequels with X-Men: First Class, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While Fox hasn't made an official announcement that either will get sequels, the profit margin has made such announcements unnecessary.
More movement has been made on Rise — the more profitable of the two movies at $480 million worldwide — with Fox already securing actor Andy Serkis to reprise his role (in motion-capture) as the lead ape Caesar in the sequel. The studio is also exercising sequel contract options on Rise co-producers and screenwriters Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa and director Rupert Wyatt. As a result, Wyatt was forced to drop out of the true-life drama Londongrad, which examines the mysterious death of former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Twentieth Century Fox has yet to officially announce a sequel for X-Men: First Class, but that hasn't stopped cast members from talking about it. Michael Fassbender, who played Erik Lensherr, a.k.a. Magneto, recently revealed that he's "looking forward to working with all those people again," and Jason Flemyng, who plays the teleporter Azazel, recently said that "fingers crossed I'll be bright red again by next summer." James McAvoy, who played Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, agrees with the idea of a sequel.
In a recent interview with io9, McAvoy said he "would definitely like to be in the sequel," though, he qualified, "I'm bound to be in the sequel by a contract that says we do three films. So if Fox decides we're doing it, then I don't have a choice." Not that McAvoy minds. "But I would still like to," McAvoy continued. "I had a great time with [director] Matthew [Vaughn] and Michael, that was a great threesome to work with and really sort of carve out a new beginning for those two characters."

Despite earning $335 million in worldwide box office (and over a million DVD and Blu-ray copies sold in the U.S. alone), Twentieth Century Fox has yet to officially announce a sequel, though, earlier this month, First Class actor Jason Flemyng revealed that a script for X-Men: First Class 2 was in progress just as it was being reported that First Class producer Simon Kinberg was writing the script.
First Class focused on the early days of friendship between mutant leaders Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), set during the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960s. In a recent interview with Collider, Fassbender said that he had "no idea" when production on a sequel would start, but admitted that he was "looking forward to working with all those people again."

Finally, the first signs that a sequel is in the works with Fox has been revealed.
In a conversation with Digital Spy, British actor Jason Flemyng, who played the character of Azazel in First Class, revealed that a script is underway for a potential X-Men: First Class 2.

Though both a critical favorite and a box office success, X-Men: First Class didn't stack up too well against the other Marvel Comics adaptations that opened this summer — First Class opened to $55.1 million versus $65 for Captain America: The First Avenger and $65.7 for Thor — or against the rest of the X-Men movies, only beating the original's opening total by $1 million and earning only half of what X-Men: The Last Stand brought in on opening weekend. Still, Fox has apparently been discussing a sequel internally, possibly waiting to see how well the movie does now that it has been released on home video.
Now, producer Lauren Shuler Donner — the authority on the past, present and future of Fox's X-Men franchise as the producer of every one of the movies going back to X-Men in 2000 — has divulged to HitFix that things are looking "hopeful" for a First Class sequel, and that she wants Matthew Vaughn to return as director. Shuler Donner also revealed that production on the The Wolverine will be delayed (further), possibly until the middle of next year, and said that development continues on the decidedly "different" Deadpool spin-off, with no one in mind for the lead but Ryan Reynolds.

We recently got the opporunity to see how prosthetics and blue paint were used to transform a naked Jennifer Lawrence into the blue-scaled mutant shapeshifter known as Mystique in a video preview of the "Children of the Atom" extra that will be included on the X-Men: First Class DVD and Blu-ray home video releases. Now, the entire "Children of the Atom" extra, totaling more than one hour of video interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the movie, is available for viewing online as a series of eight featurettes.

To help promote that release, we have the first sneak peek at one of those extras.
