Thanksgiving Day is a special holiday. It's that one day of the year where we all get to skip work to gather with our friends and family members and simply reflect on the things in our lives that we have to be thankful for...and then watch NFL football and consume massive quantities of "harvest" food. At ReelzChannel, we're all about movies, so Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete if we didn't take the time to be thankful for all of the great new movies of the year. If you're a movie person, then we consider you part of our extended family. Since his first appearance in 1939's Detective Comics #27, Batman has been an enduring figure in all forms of media, only occasionally stepping out of the pop culture zeitgeist. This summer, director Christopher Nolan finished his Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises, which successfully re-established a Batman movie franchise after 1997's Batman & Robin had shut it down. While The Dark Knight Rises won't arrive on DVD and Blu-ray until next month, the animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 arrived on home video last week. Still, there's always an opportunity to catch up with the Caped Crusader in the seemingly endless stream of fan-made movies.
While not bankrolled by any studio, "fan films" are not made for profit but for the love of the characters. The results are popular, with a rapt audience often financially supporting their favorite fan-made projects online. While it would be impossible to reveal them all, we've compiled the latest in Batman fan movies for your convenience, which, as one might expect, span from impressively produced to laughably awful.

The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises obliterated the popular myth that the superhero action genre had run its course. When so many child actors fall victim to their own celebrity, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is truly a success story. Landing his first roles in TV movies at the tender age of six, Gordon-Levitt became a household name thanks to the five-and-a-half seasons he spent playing Tommy Solomon on 3rd Rock from the Sun. It would took him several years to find the kind of roles that would allow him to prove that he has what it takes to be a leading man, but impressive turns in the neo-noir crime movie Brick and the bittersweet dramedy (500) Days of Summer paved the way for higher-profile roles in Christopher Nolan's mind-bending blockbuster, Inception and his follow-up, The Dark Knight Rises. This week, Gordon-Levitt will take to the streets as Wilee, a New York City bicycle messenger who receives a dangerous package in writer-director David Koepp's (Ghost Town) new thriller, Premium Rush.

We may only be two-thirds of the way through the year, with the Oscar-heavy fall/winter movie season still on the horizon, but 2012 has already delivered several fantastic movies (and more than a few lemons). When last we checked in with resident movie expert Richard Roeper, he gave us his picks for the worst movies of 2012. Now, Roeper has compiled his list of the best movies of 2012, with selections in the comic book, sci-fi, action, adaptation and comedy movie categories. Some you will be able to guess, while others may surprise you. Watch the video above and see how your choices stack up against our expert's. There are many ways to determine the best and worst movies of the year. You can look at movie reviews — Rotten Tomatoes has Kirby Dick's The Invisible War at the top of the list with a rating of 100% and the Eddie Murphy vehicle A Thousand Words at the bottom with a rating of 0% — or you can tabulate box office receipts — The Avengers is the clear leader with global sales in excess of $1.46 million, while Playback starring Christian Slater earned just $264 (that's no typo!). But, we at Reelz know that the opinions of the moviegoing public — your opinions — matter just as much as those of the critics and bean-counters, which is why we took to the streets to ask which movies were the best and the worst of the year (so far).

Though the cameras stopped rolling on The Dark Knight Rises months ago, Christopher Nolan is still "working" on the movie to some extent, as he continues to travel the world to promote it. He recently said in an Empire podcast interview that he's "relieved" that the movie is done and in theaters, but he won't get the feeling that it's truly "finished" until it "has been out for a couple months" and moviegoers "have really had a chance to tell me what it is."
As far as saying his good-byes to Batman and the franchise he helped to revitalize for Warner Bros., Nolan has already done that. Nolan wrote the foreward to The Art and Making of the Dark Knight Trilogy book that serves as an eloquent, heartfelt and even somewhat humorous farewell letter to the characters that populated his trilogy and the actors who played them. Nolan writes, "I will miss the Batman. I like to think that he’ll miss me, but he’s never been particularly sentimental."

Despite the overwhelming critical acclaim for The Dark Knight — a stunning 94% approval rating on aggregate review site RottenTomatoes — both the movie and director Christopher Nolan were snubbed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when it came time to hand out Oscars and the furor over the omissions contributed, at least in part, to the expansion of nominees from five to ten. Nolan's third and final Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, is also rating very highly with — an 86% approval rating from critics, but a 93% rating from fans — though it appears to be a more polarizing movie, with some calling it a "masterpiece" and others using far less generous words to describe it. Still, The Dark Knight Rises is generating considerable Oscar buzz already, based on the merits of the movie itself and, as Oscar pundit Tom O'Neil puts it, because "Batman is holding a giant Oscar I.O.U. and academy members are obliged to pay it off."
We won't know for some time whether The Dark Knight Rises will receive any sort of recognition from the Academy, but Nolan has already made it clear that the movie owes a great deal to the performances of two of his principal actors. In a recent podcast interview with Empire, Nolan called Christian Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman "a pretty amazing achievement" and praised Anne Hathaway for her "very convincing take" on Selina Kyle/Catwoman, calling her an "incredibly precise actress" who can "captivate a thousand people and fill a room with her energy."

Academy Award-winning actor Christian Bale needed some time to collect himself after he took off the Bat-suit for the very last time. At a recent press conference to promote The Dark Knight Rises, Bale said that he "just went down and sat in a room and realized this is it." Though "real proud" of his contribution to director Christopher Nolan's revitalization of the Batman franchise following the disastrous fourth movie, Batman & Robin, Bale doesn't feel any ownership of the character. In fact, Bale told MTV that he is "immensely" interested in seeing what happens to the franchise after The Dark Knight Rises and "intrigued" to see how another actor will interpret the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman. He also gave props to one of the actors who preceeded him in playing the "Caped Crusader" and you'll probably be as surpised as we were by his selection.
