Anyone that saw 1995's Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone knows that director Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame) didn't have a high bar to climb for his upcoming Dredd to be seen as the better adaptation of the British comic book character created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra. Now that the first trailer is online, Travis, by many accounts, has exceeded expectations.
The first part of the trailer sets up the world of Mega City One, where the populace is falling under the influence of a new illegal drug controlled by drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). Coming to the city's aid is cop Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and his rookie partner, the telepathic Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who, in the movie's neo-futuristic setting can act as judge, jury, and executioner. The second half of the trailer is dedicated to the action, which seems to steamroll once Dredd and Anderson are caught inside a building controlled by Ma-Ma in a The Raid: Redemption-like twist.

After suffering through the painfully slow release of a mere handful of still images and set photos from director Pete Travis' (Vantage Point, Endgame) Dredd adaptation since the movie went into production in South Africa in November 2010, it looks like we're finally on the verge of seeing what Karl Urban looks like in motion as Judge Dredd, square-jawed dispenser of justice in the the chaotic future megalopolis known as Mega City One. Earlier today, Lionsgate used Twitter to give us a heads up that the first trailer for Dredd will finally be dropping later this week:

There's been no word on when the first trailer for director Pete Travis' (Vantage Point, Endgame) Dredd will be released, but we're starting to get a pretty good idea of what the movie will look like thanks to the still images that have been trickling out over the past several months and the poster that was released last week.
Now, we have our first look behind the scenes of the production, courtesy of 2000 AD Online, the 'net presence for the British comic book that first introduced the world to Joseph Dredd way back in March 1977. The site posted three set photos that offer the best look yet at Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby in costume as Dredd and Anderson, respectively, two of the bad-ass law-dogs known as "Judges" who patrol the mean streets of Mega City One with the power to act as police, judge, jury and executioner.

Thanks to the bomb that was Sylvestar Stallone's 1995 Judge Dredd, the bar is set pretty low for the reboot Dredd. But given what we've seen so far, we think the bar should be raised. Still awaiting a trailer, today we got a look at the movie's first poster, courtesy of Joblo.com, showing Karl Urban as the title character draped in darkness, teasingly revealing his Dredd uniform with the tagline: "Judgement is Coming." The site also posted two new stills from the movie.
The latest adaptation follows a "day in the life" of Judge Dredd as he patrols the futuristic Mega City One with his telepathic rookie partner, Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), tracking down a gang that deals with the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
Looks like this gritty adaptation should wash away that awful taste that Stallone's Dredd left in everyone's mouth.

Just because The Avengers spent all week racking up box office records and is already doing so again, taking the title of "best second Friday" away from The Dark Knight, let's not forget that there are three more superhero movies on the horizon, each hoping to take those titles away from "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." Of the three — The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Dredd — Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman movie has the best chance of kicking The Avengers off of its throne in light of the fact that most of the titles that were broken this past week were previously owned by The Dark Knight. Warner Bros. has been sparing in its promotional materials for the movie, but the studio released an awesome new high-resolution photo of Tom Hardy as the man who finally breaks the Bat, Bane, to help launch the new interactive iPad edition of Total Film Magazine.

Just because director Pete Travis' (Vantage Point, Endgame) new sci-fi movie, Dredd, is named for Joseph Dredd, the stone-faced comic book law-dog who first appeared way back in the pages of 2000 A.D. #2 (March 1977), that doesn't mean that title actor Karl Urban will be the only one laying down the law in the movie. Actress Olivia Thirlby (Juno, The Darkest Hour) will also be playing one of the "Judges" that patrol the mean streets of the dystopic futuristic city of Mega City One and act as police, judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one. In a recent interview with CraveOnline, Thirlby revealed that she got to "kick major butt" in Dredd as Judge Cassandra Anderson, a telepathic rookie who pairs up with Dredd to learn the ropes, even performing some of the character's face-kicking, neck-breaking moves herself.

A trailer for the adaptation of Dredd has yet to be revealed, but more new images have arrived to go along with the photo of Karl Urban in costume as the title character that was released last week.
Based on the British comic book created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, the character of Judge Dredd is mostly known in the States because of the poorly received 1995 movie adaptation that starred Sylvester Stallone. The latest adaptation follows a "day in the life" of Judge Dredd as he patrols the futuristic Mega City One with his telepathic rookie partner, Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). While that sounds almost peaceful, the new photos from fansite 2000AD reveal that a "day in the life" of Judge Dredd means extreme violence, particularly the photo where Anderson delivers swift justice in the form of a bullet to the back of someone's head.

A pair of new images from two upcoming sci-fi movies have been released online. The first, a large close-up shot of Karl Urban in costume as the futuristic law-dog Judge Dredd in director Pete Travis' (Vantage Point, Endgame) Dredd comes courtesy of Total Film magazine (scan by StarkIndustries.ru). The image doesn't reveal much more than what we've seen previously, but it does seem to support Urban's promise that his Judge Dredd — as opposed to Sylvester Stallone's version in the 1995 movie adaptation — will "keep [the] helmet on."
The second image comes directly from the set of the currently-in-production sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick and was posted online by franchise star Vin Diesel via his personal Facebook page. The image is the second shot of Diesel in costume that has been released in the last two weeks and shows Riddick wearing a different costume than the "Necro-armor" he sported in the last set photo.

Notwithstanding a false rumor about director Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame) getting fired from Danny Boyle's (Slumdog Millionaire) DNA Films-produced Judge Dredd adaptation while the movie is in post-production, it's been pretty quiet on the Dredd front for several months now. Title star Karl Urban pleased the die-hard fans of the British comic book character back in September when he said that Dredd should be "mysterious and enigmatic" and that he "would just puke" if he went to a movie about the character in which Dredd took off his Judge's helmet — a not-so-veiled dig at the 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone — but you would have to go back to July, when Dredd's full costume was revealed, to find any relevant news about the movie. Well, good news, "Dredd Heads," the L.A. Times recently interviewed prolific comic book writer John Wagner and the co-creator (with artist Carlos Ezquerra) of Judge Dredd not only discussed his most famous co-creation, but also found a few nice things to say about Stallone's dreadful movie version and offered a few details about the plot of the new movie.

Mere days ago, we reported that the upcoming sci-fi Judge Dredd reboot Dredd had lost its director, even though it had already finished shooting in March and had moved on to editing. Turns out, that's not the case at all.
"Creative disagreements" were cited as the cause for director Pete Travis' (Endgame, Vantage Point) dismissal in the original LA Times article. The report also claimed that screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) had taken over in the editing room and could seek out a co-director credit. In a joint statement now printed in the original LA Times report, Garland and Travis refuted any reports about Travis being fired.
