Which promising movies fell shortest of expectations?
When we first heard the news that J.J. Abrams had been hired by Disney to continue the adventures of Luke Skywalker and company as the director of Star Wars: Episode VII, we were almost beside ourselves with enthusiasm. After all, as the director of Star Trek (2009), Abrams proved that he could revitalize a classic sci-fi franchise while remaining true to its core concepts and respectful of its legacy. Added to that the fact that Abrams will be shooting from a script written by Academy Award-winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) and Episode VII is bound to be the greatest Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi, right? We'll see. We're keeping our fingers crossed, but gearing down from "enthusiastic" to "hopefully optimistic."
Studios don't set out to make bad movies, yet they churn them out each and every year. Sure, most bad movies are doomed from the get-go, be they saddled with a bad script, a director who lacks vision, a cast made up of eye candy instead of actors, or some combination thereof, but even movies that seem to have everything going for them can still turn out to be dreadful. A movie about cowboys fighting aliens starring Indiana Jones and James Bond directed by the man who brought us Iron Man? Sounds awesome! Too bad Cowboys and Aliens turned out to be just another one of those movies that should have been great, but ultimately left us feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.

While the movies may not be everyone's cup of Rohypnol, there's no denying the success of The Hangover and its sequel, The Hangover Part II, which out-earned its predecessor at $581 million worldwide. Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros. is interested in a third installment, hiring screenwriter Craig Mazin in June to write the script. Mazin co-wrote The Hangover Part II with Scot Armstrong and director Todd Phillips.
Prior to Mazin's hiring, Phillips admitted that a third Hangover "would very much be a finale and an ending," prompting many to wonder where the third movie will take place. After spending time in both Las Vegas and Bangkok, Hangover actors Jamie Chung (Lauren, Ed Helms' fiancée in The Hangover Part II) and Justin Bartha (Doug) separately suggested Amsterdam, as a possible location. While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Bradley Cooper said production could begin next year on the sequel and offered a contrasting location for the Wolfpack to reunite.

With all the summer movies released, it's time to take stock of what we saw on-screen. And what their successes and failures have taught us. For starters, we've learned that there can, in fact, be too many superhero movies; that not even Pixar can bat 1.000 forever; and that the funniest comedy of the season can, despite sexist naysayers, star an almost entirely female cast.
It also seems we've gotten really (really) comfortable with sequels, reboots, and remakes. You could say 2011 was the summer of comfort food.

Voting is now open for the Teen Choice Awards, and fans can vote for Robert Pattinson in no less than four separate categories (Actor Drama, Actor Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Liplock, and Male Hottie). There are a ton of categories, 23 for movies alone, and there are apparently more summer category nominations to come. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is nominated nine times, The Hangover Part II has nine nods, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Super 8 are strongly represented as well.

The Hangover Part II cast members Jamie Chung and Justin Bartha have both publicly stated that Amsterdam would be the perfect location for The Hangover Part III, but, while likely, that has yet to be confirmed.

In what should be a surprise to no one, Warner Bros. wants to make a third Hangover.
After The Hangover Part II scored a record-setting opening weekend, The Wrap reports that Warners has hired screenwriter Craig Mazin to write the third installment. Mazin co-wrote The Hangover Part II with Scot Armstrong and director Todd Phillips.
Deadline reports that no deal is in place yet for Mazin to write the sequel, but since The Hangover Part II is about to pass the $200 million mark in worldwide box office, that an official announcement from the studio is inevitable.
