With its Don't Be Afraid of the Dark remake opening today, Miramax is giving audiences one last marketing push, unveiling a final red band trailer as well as a preview clip.
Originally made as a 1973 TV movie, the remake stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as a young couple trying to renovate an older, Gothic home. When Pearce's daughter Sally (Bailee Madison) is sent to live with them by her mother, she soon discovers that small creatures are living in the basement. Unfortunately for Sally, they don't want to be friends.

FilmDistrict has released two new preview clips from director Troy Nixey's (Latchkey's Lament) upcoming R-rated horror movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The movie is a remake of a 1973 TV movie of the same name and was co-written by Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro, who first collaborated together on the script for Mimic (1997).
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as Alex and Kim Hirst, a young couple who inherit an old mansion and begin renovating it. Unbeknownst to them, however, their renovations stir up some dark forces dwelling within the mansion, forces that wish to claim Alex's young daughter, Sally (Bailee Madison), as one of their own. Alan Dale, Jack Thompson and Nicholas Bell also star.

After releasing a teaser poster in May and one in early June, FilmDistrict has finally released an official theatrical poster for co-writer (with Matthew Robbins) and producer Guillermo del Toro's new horror movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Directed by Troy Nixey (Latchkey's Lament), the movie is a remake of the 1973 made-for-TV movie of the same name and stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as Alex and Kim Hirst, a young couple who unwittingly awaken the evil creatures dwelling beneath the mansion they are renovating, creatures which long to claim Alex's daughter, Sally (Bailee Madison), as one of their own.

In March, director Guillermo del Toro moved on to his upcoming monster movie Pacific Rim after Universal Studios canceled his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, despite the participation of James Cameron as producer and Tom Cruise in the lead role.
Written by Travis Beacham, Pacific Rim follows humanity fighting against an invasion of Godzilla-like monsters. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and, possibly, Charlie Day ("I'm not officially signed on," Day recently revealed) will play the human collective defending the planet. In an interview with Collider, del Toro recently discussed the movie's progress.

It's been a long, brutal winter in most parts of the country, so it's no surprise that even Hollywood is looking to get a jump on summer. The rollout of blockbuster movies starts this Friday, a full month before the Memorial Day Weekend.
As you'd expect (and hope), the mix of movies being offered up is heavy on the Action/Adventure movies (11) and Comedies (10). There's also plenty of offerings for Kids/Families (8). What's new this year is the addition of more R-rated comedies, thanks in no small measure to The Hangover's runaway success two summers back. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, producer Guillermo del Toro's remake of the 1973 made-for-TV movie of the same name, has been picked up for domestic distribution by Peter Schlessel and Bob Berney's FilmDistrict according to Deadline. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was directed by Troy Nixey (Latchkey's Lament) and stars Bailee Madison as a young girl who accidentally awakens the evil creatures living in the basement of the mansion that her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) are renovating. A release date of August 12th has been set for the movie.

Guillermo del Toro's appearances at this year's Comic-Con were highlighted by the director's announcement that he would be writing and producing a remake of The Haunted Mansion, Disney's 2003 family comedy based on its popular amusement park attraction. However, the Haunted Mansion appearance was only his first. Del Toro was also at the convention to promote the upcoming horror movie remake he co-wrote and produced, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, where del Toro showed an eight-minute prologue and a trailer for the horror movie. Del Toro told Deadline that it was his most successful panel at the Comic-Con.
