David Fincher to Direct 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Instead of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Sequel?

It seems box office receipts aren't the only way to get a sequel made these days.

Last week, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Columbia Pictures decided to keep developing the sequel to director David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, despite Dragon Tattoo's mediocre box office numbers (currently at $106 million worldwide on a $90 million budget). Based on the first of Stieg Larsson's international best-selling "Millennium" trilogy of novels, Dragon Tattoo's holiday opening was ultimately seen as the movie's undoing (the movie's first trailer dubbed the thriller "the feel-bad movie of Christmas"). Nevertheless, Sony decided to not only move forward with The Girl Who Played with Fire, Steig's second novel in the trilogy, but also with The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, anticipating that international box office could eventually bring in $200 million to $300 million worldwide.

Dragon Tattoo screenwriter Steven Zaillian (American Gangster) is already set to adapt both novels, but Fincher is still in question. The director revealed last month that he feels no "need" to make sequels to Dragon Tattoo, and he could be too busy with another, long-gestating project.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Sequel Still in the Works

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Columbia Pictures took a chance by releasing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — the American adaptation of late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's international best-selling novel of the same name — into a crowded holiday theater market, where it was crushed at the box office by sequels like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol, as well as 3-D family fare like The Adventures of Tintin. Nevertheless, the studio is moving forward with a sequel, despite the mediocre box office numbers ($72 million worldwide on a $90 million budget).

Noomi Rapace on Alien Prequel Rumors and Working with Ridley Scott

Noomi Rapace has already become something of a sensation in Europe thanks to her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the Millenium Trilogy of movies—The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest—based on the novels of the late Stieg Larsson, and now the Award-winning Swedish actress is poised to become a household name in America, as well. Rapace landed a top-secret role in director Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes 2 alongside Robert Downey Jr. and is rumored to be in talks for the lead in Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel. While in LA on Monday to promote the U.S. release of Hornet's Nest on October 29th, Rapace addressed the Alien Prequel rumors and said that she would love to work with Scott.

Director Ridley Scott is busy trying to find a female lead for his upcoming Alien Prequel, reportedly meeting with several actresses. The role has to be an exciting prospect for actresses, since starring in Scott's 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien certainly helped Sigourney Weaver's career.
