Is it really already awards season? You bet your ballot it is. Today, the Critics' Choice nominations were announced, and all the usual suspects are in the running for Best Picture, including Hugo, The Tree of Life, War Horse, and The Descendants. A few dark horses also garnered noms, including the polarizing Drive and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which really hasn't had much presence yet this award season.
The Critics' Choice Movie Awards winners will be announced live on VH1 on January 12th, and Reelz will be there on the red carpet with live coverage from the Hollywood Palladium with hosts Sam Rubin and Jessica Holmes starting at 6pm ET and 3pm PT.

Since the very first trailer for the upcoming period drama War Horse debuted in March, subsequent marketing has screamed one thing: "Oscar!" From the sweeping score by multiple Academy Award winner John Williams to the World War I setting and touching story about a horse and its owner (Jeremy Irvine) derived from the play adaptation of the children's novel by Michael Morpurgo, this movie is destined for Academy Award noms. And it doesn't hurt that it was directed by Steven Spielberg.
Two new TV spots shows the movie's Oscar potential to the public, with one spot devoted to the movie's epic story that sweeps through war-torn England and Europe to an extended spot that mixes footage of the movie with interviews with the cast, including Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Thewlis.

The Oscars are still months away, but that doesn't mean we don't already have a surprisingly good idea what voters will be picking. A few of these pictures have already been released, but as usual most of the real front-runners have been kept for the final weeks of the year. The assumption is that voters usually choose whatever happened to be the last flick they saw in theaters (which, sadly, seems to be true in quite a few cases). The expanded Academy Awards Best Picture category once again means that up to 10 movies may be nominated.
We've made our predictions about which 10 movies will get Best Picture nominations, and ordered the list by likelihood of winning. We also pick five more that we think won't quite make the cut.

This Holiday season, audiences will be able to enjoy not one, but two movies from director Steven Spielberg — the CGI-animated The Adventures of Tintin and period drama War Horse. While both movies were recently rescheduled, they're still opening within days of each other, with War Horse moving to Christmas Day instead of a few days after (TinTin opens first on December 21st).
Set during World War I, War Horse was based on the play adaptation of the children's novel by Michael Morpurgo and follows a horse's journey through England and Europe after it is separated from its original owner (Jeremy Irvine). A previous trailer was released in June, and while the latest trailer offers new footage, they both suggest the same thing: Oscar noms.

Director Steven Spielberg has two movies opening this December: one you've probably heard of (The Adventures of Tintin), and one you probably haven't (War Horse). The hype surrounding Tintin is understandable: It's motion-capture animation was overseen by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, who produced the movie, and having both Spielberg and Jackson team up has to entice even the casual movie fan.
As for War Horse, our best guess for the studio silence to date is that Oscar season advertising doesn't really start until it's closer to the end of the year. The first trailer definitely has that epic feel. Set during World War I, War Horse follows, as you'd guess, a horse on a journey through England and Europe after it is separated from its original owner (Jeremy Irvine).

Director Steven Spielberg has proven time and again that his movies can compete at the box office. Next December, though, we'll find out how he competes against himself when two of his movies open within five days of each other. Spielberg's 3-D, animated adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn opens on December 23, with the director's adaptation of War Horse following on December 28.
While The Secret of the Unicorn is an adaptation of the Tintin comic books by Belgian author and illustrator Georges "Hergé" Remi, War Horse is based on the play that was based on the children's novel by Michael Morpurgo. If that seems confusing, the movie's official synopsis will clear it up.

Steven Spielberg's highly-anticipated, 3-D-animated adaptation The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn will be getting some competition when it opens in theaters in December of 2011 from a movie by another acclaimed, Academy-Award winning director: himself.
Deadline reports that Dreamworks has moved Spielberg's upcoming War Horse from its initial August release date to December 28, opening a mere 5 days after The Adventures of Tintin's December 23 release. DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider told The LA Times that the proximity of the two movies was not a concern for the studio.
