The 2011 comedy Bridesmaids proved that, not only can female actresses be as funny and gross as their male counterparts, but that audiences would eat it up and come back for more. Well, Bridesmaids 2 may never happen without Kristen Wiig, but the cast of Bachelorette — Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Bridesmaids star Rebel Wilson — recently took to the red carpet for the premiere of their R-rated female-driven comedy and they claim that their movie is "even ruder, even raunchier" than Bridesmaids.
Another female-led movie premiered the same night as Bachelorette, but this one trades laughs for screams. Twilight star Ashley Greene headlines writer-director Todd Lincoln's new supernatural horror movie, The Apparition, which centers around a "horrifying apparition" that is actually conjured into existence by parapsychology students trying to prove that belief in the supernatural is enough for it to exist. Greene hasn't had any paranormal frights of her own (that she cared to share, anyway), but she did reveal to our own Jeremy Parsons the scariest experience of her life. With all the buzz suggesting that there will be a sequel to last spring's smash-hit Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig has put an end to the rumors once and for all, telling E!'s Mark Malkin:
We're not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we're really excited to try something else.
Although Universal could still make a follow-up movie, it would not include the main source of its overall success — the SNL alum who starred in and wrote the flick. However, Wiig and Bridesmaids cowriter Annie Mumolo have something else in the works.
It's going to be a little bit of a different tone, but it's going to be a comedy, for sure.
While we await news on that new project, you can see Wiig reunite with co-star Jon Hamm in the upcoming comedy Friends with Kids.

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Universal Pictures was considering doing a sequel to its break-out comedy hit Bridesmaids without co-writer and star Kristen Wiig. "We aren't working on that," Wiig succinctly told the publication. "[Co-writer] Annie [Mumolo] and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else."
Universal clearly would like a sequel, after Bridesmaids surprisingly grossed $288 million in worldwide box office, so the studio reportedly took Wiig to dinner to convince her of the sequel's necessity, but the Saturday Night Live actress didn't bite (on the sequel). That hasn't exactly slowed Universal's interest in a possible Bridesmaids 2. "We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right," a Universal rep told THR. "We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."
In lieu of Wiig, Universal co-star Melissa McCarthy as a "key player" for another Bridesmaids, however, McCarthy recently told E! Online that she has little interest in working on Bridesmaids 2 without Wiig.

With all the summer movies released, it's time to take stock of what we saw on-screen. And what their successes and failures have taught us. For starters, we've learned that there can, in fact, be too many superhero movies; that not even Pixar can bat 1.000 forever; and that the funniest comedy of the season can, despite sexist naysayers, star an almost entirely female cast.
It also seems we've gotten really (really) comfortable with sequels, reboots, and remakes. You could say 2011 was the summer of comfort food.

This summer's movie schedule is filled with the sequels, prequels and big-budget blockbuster tentpoles audiences have come to expect every year, but this summer also brought out several R-rated comedies, such as The Hangover Part II, Bad Teacher, Horrible Bosses, and Bridesmaids.
While The Hangover Part II has easily earned the most money so far (Horrible Bosses comes out this Friday), Bridesmaids has been a strong second, earning, to date, $154 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing movie of Judd Apatow's career (the Knocked Up director produced the movie). In an interview with Movieline, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig discussed the landmark.
It’s kinda what I secretly hoped would happen. The funny thing was, pretty much from the moment we wrapped and started editing, Judd would always — joking, but serious — refer to this as his most successful film. It was really exciting that it actually turned out to be that.

With the recently-released comedy Bridesmaids holding onto the #2 spot at the box office for two weeks in a row, the movie looks like its headed for a box office take of over $100 million (it's already more than halfway there). And, in Hollywood terms, that can mean only one thing: sequel.
While some may ask whether a sequel is even possible, considering the upcoming Hangover sequel, it wouldn't seem impossible for "the female Hangover" to get another installment. Director Paul Feig recently admitted to Vulture that he's "up for the challenge."
