The American moviegoing public will believe anything they see.
That's apparently the perception of the bigwigs at NASA because the agency has released a statement, reassuring people that there was no Apollo 18 mission that landed on the moon — and just in case the dense American public can't then make the next leap, that no astronauts on the non-existant mission encountered something on the moon and never made it back.
Bert Ulrick, NASA's liaison for multimedia, film and television collaborations, spoke to the L.A. Times to calm public fears about the "found footage" movie.
Apollo 18 is not a documentary. The film is a work of fiction, and we always knew that. We were minimally involved with this picture. We never even saw a rough cut. The idea of portraying the Apollo 18 mission as authentic is simply a marketing ploy. Perhaps a bit of a Blair Witch Project strategy to generate hype.
