Despite the fact that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura called the as-yet-untitled fourth installment in the Transformers franchise a "reboot" when discussing it in February, director Michael Bay recently refuted that description. Sure, the movie will have an entirely new cast and the robots will be redesigned, but Bay said that the franchise is simply "moving on to something different," rather than starting over, and that everything that happened in the previous movies "still counts."

This week's confirmation that Michael Bay would return to the director's chair for Transformers 4 (working title) wasn't a surprise to anyone, except perhaps the supporting cast of the past three Transformers movies.
Transformers star Shia LaBeouf already revealed that he does not want to return for a fourth installment, saying that, "I imagine they'll reboot it at some point with someone else." And last September, co-star Tyrese Gibson said that he thought both Bay and LaBeouf would return for a fourth movie. Turns out they're both right.

Oops! What was supposed to be a major announcement from Parmount Pictures — that Michael Bay will return to direct a fourth installment in the studio's popular Transformers franchise — was spoiled yesterday when producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura unceremoniously disclosed the information to MTV during a video interview at Toy Fair 2012. According to Deadline, "Paramount is furious at di Bonaventura" for not only spilling the beans about Bay's involvement, but also revealing that Transformers 4 (working title) will be a "reboot...hybrid" that keeps the "continuity" of the first three movies, but with "a whole new story" and "a lot of new cast."

Steven Spielberg recently said that he would like Michael Bay to return as director for Transformers 4, which is currently in planning stages. Bay had previously announced publicly that he was "not talking to Paramount" about another Transformers movie and was instead looking to direct the body builder comedy Pain and Gain instead — a project Bay was planning to do before he was convinced by Paramount to direct this summer's Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Whether it was Spielberg, Paramount executives, or Bay himself that did the convincing this time, it looks like the action movie director has had a change of heart about returning for a fourth Transformers movie.

After Transformers: Dark of the Moon became one of the biggest comic book movie hits of the summer (and of the year, just behind just Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) after earning over a billion dollars worldwide, it came as no surprise when Hasbro CEO and Transformers producer Brian Goldner revealed that the toy company was in talks with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Paramount Pictures about Transformers 4 (working title). Further reports indicated that Transformers 4 could be shot back-to-back with Transfomers 5, but Bay quickly refuted the reports. "I am currently not talking to Paramount on T4 and T5 despite reports," Bay announced on his personal website.
Whether Bay's comments are a negotiating tact is unknown, but there is someone who wants Bay back for a fourth installment in the Transformers franchise: Spielberg. During an interview about his long career in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, Spielberg said that he wanted Bay to return for Transformers 4.

Shortly after the success of Star Trek, the 2009 reboot of the widely popular sci-fi franchise, Paramount scheduled a June 29, 2012, release date for Star Trek 2 (working title) despite lacking a script and a commitment to return from director J.J. Abrams.
In July, Paramount finally gave the release date to G.I. Joe: Retaliation, pushing Star Trek 2 into a date to be determined. THR reports the sequel could arrive as soon as 2013, according to a quarterly conference call with Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, who also mentioned that Abrams was "focused on developing the next installment of our Star Trek franchise."

Earlier this week, Transformers fans were greeted with the news that Hasbro CEO and Transformers producer Brian Goldner was in talks with Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and Paramount Pictures about Transformers 4 (working title), the follow-up to this summer's outrageously successful Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Further reports claimed that a fourth installment would also mean a fifth, and the two would be shot back-to-back. While that news may be true, Bay told fans on his personal website's forum that he is not personally involved in any talks for Transformers 4.

This summer's Transformers: Dark of the Moon grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, and now a few new reports show what might be in store for future installments.
Bay has already claimed that he wants to direct the low-budget, dark comedy Pain & Gain next, which, at the very least, means that Hasbro and Paramount have to wait for Bay's services to become available. Should Bay return to the director's chair, he could be directing not one, but two Transformers sequels back-to-back.

Such is the case with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which easily outperformed the other comic book movies of the summer, prompting the producers to claim that there will be "a second trilogy" that will not be a reboot. However, franchise star Shia LaBeouf has publicly stated that he does not want to return for a potential Transformers 4, while director Michael Bay admitted to MTV in June that he's finally going to make the low-budget, dark comedy Pain & Gain "next", making Bay's involvement questionable.
