"I thought sick people sometimes make things up."
The clock is ticking on Traffic and Erin Brockovich director Steven Soderbergh's career, with only two more movies to go before he goes into a voluntary retirement. After exploring the world of male exotic dancing in last year's Magic Mike and the global response to a pandemic in 2011's Contagion, Soderbergh's latest, Side Effects (formerly The Bitter Pill), targets the world of prescription drugs as it follows Emily Hawkins (Rooney Mara), an unsettled young woman who turns to prescription drugs to deal with the depression she suffers after her husband (Channing Tatum) is sent to prison. But after her husband is released, the drug prescribed to her by her psychiatrist (Jude Law) seems to be having curious, and potentially dangerous, effect.
Side Effects is clearly a thriller, though who exactly is in danger and who is to blame seems to be up in the air in this latest, international thriller.more mysterious trailers

But news out today indicates there has already been a change, with Rooney Mara replacing Lively as the lead in the movie.
Deadline reports that Mara, fresh from an Academy Award nomination for her work in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is set to play Emily Hawkins, an unsettled young woman who turns to prescription drugs to deal with the pending release of her husband (Tatum) from prison. Law will play her new psychiatrist who strikes up a relationship with Emily, while Catherine Zeta-Jones will play another of Emily's doctors. why was Lively replaced? >> Posted 01.30.12 by Ryan
Looks as though Catherine Zeta-Jones may once again be reuniting with director Steven Soderbergh. The two have previously worked together on box office hits Ocean's Twelve and Traffic. In the upcoming Side Effects, Zeta-Jones would have a starring role as Dr. Erica Siebert.
Zeta-Jones is in negotiations for the thriller, along with would-be co-stars Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Channing Tatum. Said to be in the "Jagged Edge-Basic Instinct" mold, Deadline describes the movie as follows.
Lively plays a troubled and depressed woman who is taking serious amounts of prescription drugs, which leads her into a relationship with another doctor (Law). Her intake is ostensibly designed to help her deal with the anxiety surrounding the pending release of her husband (Tatum) from prison.
Production is set to start in April, but according to Variety film studio Annapurna has pulled out of financing the project. No word on whether this will push back production of the movie that has a rumored $30 million budget. Posted 01.25.12 by reelz
Director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean's Eleven) is sprinting toward his planned sabbatical/retirement.
With Haywire opening later this month, and Magic Mike opening this summer, Soderbergh has started casting his penultimate movie, the thriller The Side Effects. Briefly called The Bitter Pill before returning to its original title, Soderbergh signed on to direct the movie after exiting his The Man from U.N.C.L.E. adaptation.
Written by frequent Soderbergh collaborator Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!, Contagion, and, ironically, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), The Playlist reports that Soderbergh has cast actors Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Blake Lively in the movie. Tatum previously worked with Soderbergh on both Haywire and Magic Mike and Law reportedly loved working on Contagion with Soderbergh, while Lively (Green Lantern) is a newcomer to the director. more about The Side Effects >> Posted 01.10.12 by Ryan
