The hunt is on for a good werewolf movie. Again.
Universal Pictures built their foundation on the classic, black and white monster movies like 1931's Dracula and 1941's The Wolf Man, and, after successfully rebooting The Mummy and turning it into a franchise, the studio tried again with The Wolfman in 2010 with less successful results. Mired in production issues, including director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) stepping in to helm with only three weeks left before shooting began, The Wolfman failed to earn back its $150 million budget. The studio's response? Rebooting the reboot with Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, which has now quietly arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The plot is fairly simple: a 19th Century European village is being terrorized by a werewolf and a doctor's apprentice (Guy Wilson) joins a team of werewolf hunters (Ed Quinn, Steven Bauer, and Adam Croasdell) to bring down the, well, beast among them. Academy Award—nominated actor Stephen Rea (The Crying Game) and Nia Peeples (Fame, North Shore) co-star in the movie, which was shot in Romania by straight-to-DVD director Louis Morneau (Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, The Hitcher II).
