Legendary Pictures will produce an upcoming biopic of hall-of-fame baseball star Jackie Robinson, Variety reports. Robinson broke new ground when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, becoming the first African-American professional baseball player to join the Major Leagues since 1889, when baseball became segregated. Over the course of his career, Robinson won Rookie of the Year, was selected to six All Star teams, and played in six World Series.
Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, is collaborating with the studio to maintain biographical authenticity. Helming the project as writer-director will be Brian Helgeland, whose previous writing credits include L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, and A Knight's Tale.
