Whether you've seen Downfall or not, you've probably come across one of the many "Angry Hitler" YouTube videos.
If not, here's the gist: Various people took a scene from the movie — in which Hitler (played by Bruno Ganz) loses his temper — and applied false subtitles to comment on everything from Inglourious Basterds to Kanye's Taylor Swift sabotage to Hillary Clinton's loss to the lack of a giant squid in the Watchmen movie. There's even one in which he comments on the phenomenon, itself.
Well, Vulture got ahold of Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel and, apparently, he can't get enough of the ongoing meme.
I think I've seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn't get a better compliment as a director.
He also doesn't think that the scene's being used for comedic purposes ruins its meaning.
The point of the film was to kick these terrible people off the throne that made them demons, making them real and their actions into reality. I think it's only fair if now it's taken as part of our history, and used for whatever purposes people like. If only I got royalties for it, then I'd be even happier.
So, if you're not familar with this whole business, then check out two of the director's favorites: Hitler reacts to the death of Michael Jackson and the dictator can't get tickets to see Billy Elliot. Posted 01.16.10 by reelz
