One of the most enduring TV and movie franchises in entertainment history, Star Trek started in the 1960s with the original TV series, and will soon unveil its latest movie installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, next month. Shrouded in secrecy, all that is known is that the Enterprise crew will take on John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), a Starfleet officer who seeks revenge for reasons that have yet to be divulged. However, with the new Star Trek series having the ability to use older canon while also hurtling into undiscovered territory, whether John Harrison is actually Khan (as fans continue to purport) will be up for debate until the movie opens. In the meantime, there is still other possibilities for Harrison's identity, which can only fans can prepare themselves for the next movie by catching up with the rest of the franchise. Fortunately, we have a plan for anyone to become familiar with the Star Trek franchise, and all you need is 8 hours to do it. check out the "essential" Star Trek >> Posted 04.10.13 by Ryan
It was 45 years ago today that TV audiences were first taken where no man had gone before with the debut of Star Trek. The original series had relatively low Nielsen ratings and was canceled after three seasons, but the franchise still managed to become an overwhelming success. Since then, the original series has spawned four more live-action series, an animated series, eleven movies (with one more on the way), hundreds of novels, short stories and comic books, board, video and role-playing games, and tons of merchandise (including a marshmallow dispenser and a talking lunchbox). In addition, a 184 acre, billion dollar plus Star Trek resort is currently underway in Jordan and set to open in 2014. But why is it so big? Wouldn't they just need a handful of holodecks?
In honor of the anniversary, SCIENCE posted a clip from their upcoming Trek Nation, a documentary that follows Rod Roddenberry on a journey to learn more about his father, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. watch the clip >> Posted 09.08.11 by Mandy
