You know you've made it when Saturday Night Live makes fun of you.
Last night, SNL ran a skit of The Roosevelts, supposedly the next presidential dramatic series airing on ReelzChannel. In the skit, Bill Hader plays FDR and the show's guest host, Helen Mirren, plays Eleanor Roosevelt. Let's just say, there's some "dramatic license" used in telling the story of the 32nd president.
According to this mini-series, it was Eleanor who recommended to her husband that he pretend he was need of a wheelchair to win the election and had an illicit love affair with Marilyn Monroe, played by Abby Elliot (despite that fact that Monroe was only five at the time). The skit got pretty heated when Elliot and Mirren lock lips (historians have stated that Eleanor was actually gay) and when Mirren, who never shies away from showing some skin, is seen ordering the attack on Pearl Harbor topless. Fred Armisen appears in the skit, playing The Kennedys producer Joel Surnow.
Did I take liberties? Sure. But it's TV, you gots to.
Those liberties also included a black Teddy Roosevelt, played by Kenan Thompson, faking his death to be a spy for the Russians.
Watch the clip below and let us know what you think. And don't forget to watch the 2-hour conclusion of The Kennedys tonight. Programming note: ReelzChannel is currently in negotiations to acquire the rights to The Roosevelts. Stay tuned for more details. watch the The Roosevelts skit >>
