In Contraband, a former smuggler (Mark Wahlberg) is forced back into the game to settle his brother-in-law's debt to a ruthless drug lord (Giovanni Ribisi). While the "you're not really out of the life until you pull off that one last job" premise isn't new — in fact you could say it's an all-too-familiar setup — Richard Roeper says it doesn't matter: "From start to finish, this is a superbly crafted, beautifully executed caper with never a dull moment." Find out why he gave it an A-. Watch Roeper's Review of Contraband >> Posted 01.12.12 by reelz

Yeah, it’s a remake of an Icelandic film, and I play a guy who was a world-class smuggler and who’s left that world behind for his wife and children. My younger brother-in-law gets in trouble in the merchant marine world and has some very shady people after him, so I go back for one last run to fix this problem for him. We’ve been having a lot of fun, shooting it down-and-dirty very much like The Fighter. But it’s very different from my performance in The Fighter. There’s a lot of energy, excitement, and humor.
Gangster Squad is getting a new member.
Deadline reports that Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar) has joined the Warner Bros. production as a police officer whose specialty is electrics and wiring. The rest of the squad, so far, includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, Bryan Cranston and Michael Pena.
Gangster Squad is based on a series of Los Angeles Times articles by Paul Lieberman which followed an elite squad of police officers who went after gangsters like "Mickey" Cohen (played by Sean Penn in the movie) in 1949 Los Angeles. Novelist and former South Central Los Angeles cop Will Beall wrote the script, which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less). Production begins this September. The upcoming drama Middle Men tells the age-old story of a family man (Luke Wilson) who finds fortune after he teams with two other enterprising individuals (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht) in an effort to distribute pornography over the burgeoning Internet of 1995. On the surface the story doesn't seem filled with much drama, but trouble brews when grifters, the Russian mafia, and federal agents all start to take an interest in the group's success. The clips from Avatar just keep on coming. While most of what we have seen up to this point features the blue-skinned aliens or the arsenal of weapons and machines the humans brought to Pandora, this new footage offers a less flashy look at the conflicts and bad conscience that have sprung up among the colonists over the way they are exploiting the planet.
Here we have Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) as a research scientist venting her disaffection with the more machine-gun aspects of the hearts and minds campaign, and getting set straight by an amoral corporate flack Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi), who points her back in the direction of of the bottom line. Along the way we get some backstory about all the company has done to "civilize" the natives. Posted 12.04.09 by reelz
