He may be playing "the first superhero" ever in the Brett Ratner-directed Hercules, opening July 25th, but that hasn't quelled Dwayne Johnson's thirst for a bonafide cape-and-tights superhero role. Johnson has been lobbying hard for a superhero role since comic book movies took over Hollywood in the wake of the first Iron Man, but there were always questions about whether or not "The Rock" could carry a movie on his own and the right role never materialized. Johnson has proven to be "franchise Viagra" for the Mummy, Fast & Furious and G.I. Joe series and that appears to have been enough for Warner Bros. to give Johnson a shot, as he revealed yesterday via Twitter that he has already secured a role among the pantheon of DC superheroes that includes Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
So, which character will he be playing? Johnson's not telling, but he did offer some more incite on his tweets by telling CBR that the character has three important qualities:
The first quality we were looking for was that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on. ...The other quality was that he had to — the character we were looking for had to be well-known but never brought to life. Then what that does again as an actor, it gives me a little bit of space, and we talked about personality. ...The third thing — and most important — is he had to be a badass motherf*cker, okay, and on a Superman level of power, where [he] could throw down. In those three qualities, I’m happy we’ve found that character.
