Writer-director Quentin Tarantino has been slowly putting together a solid cast for his upcoming "Southern" Django Unchained, which follows Jamie Foxx as a freed slave determined to rescue his wife from a sadistic slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Tarantino recently added his Deathproof actor Kurt Russell to the cast as evil slave trainer Ace Woody, replacing Kevin Costner who recently dropped out, as well as Kill Bill, Vol. 2's Laura Cayouette as DiCaprio's widowed sister.
Deadline reports that the latest addition to the cast is Don Johnson, who will play a wealthy plantation owner named Spencer Bennett. Casting a veteran actor who hasn't been in many recent high-profile projects is typical of Tarantino, who rejuvenated the careers of actors like John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown). Johnson recently appeared as the villainous Von Stillman in last year's Machete, directed by Tarantino's friend and frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez.
Johnson joins a cast filled with Tarantino alumni, including Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz. Django is set to start shooting in November, and has been given a release date of December 25, 2012. The explosive first theatrical trailer for Robert Rodriguez's Machete debuted yesterday and now a second set of character posters has been released. The four new posters spotlight Robert De Niro as McLaughlin, The Senator targeted for assassination; Michelle Rodriguez as Shé, a "saucy taco slinger" who comes to Machete's aid; Don Johnson as the knife-happy Lt. Stillman; and Steven Seagal as the drug lord Torrez.
Two previously released character posters featured Danny Trejo as Machete, a former Mexican Federale-turned-hitman who is double-crossed and sold out after being contracted to snuff a corrupt U.S. senator, and Jessica Alba as Sartana, the ICE agent tasked with bringing Machete to justice. Rodriguez co-wrote and co-directed Machete with Álvaro Rodríguez and Ethan Maniquis, respectively. Cheech Marin, Jeff Fahey, and Lindsay Lohan also star. Posted 07.10.10 by BrentJS
Five new theater lobby card-style images for Robert Rodriguez's "Mex-ploitation" movie, Machete, have been released. The more pedestrian cards of the bunch feature Danny Trejo giving an "I eat punks like you for breakfast" stare, and Jessica Alba posing and trying her hardest to look tough as Sartana, a special agent on the hunt for Trejo's renegade Mexican hitman. However, the other two cards are really cool. The first one depicts 80s heartthrob Don Johnson looking much more deadly and menacing than he ever did on Miami Vice or Nash Bridges, while the second card shows 90s action hero Steven Seagal squaring off against Trejo with two samurai swords.
