USA Today goes down the rabbit hole with Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and comes back up with some amazing pieces of eye candy. Alice, played by the Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, is glimpsed wandering in a garden populated by towering mushrooms and flowers with human faces, not to mention being checked out amid some surreal topiary by The White Rabbit. We also get a look the rather disturbing-looking twins, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who resemble giant bloated versions of Pugsly from The Addams Family.
To go along with all this, the studio has also released some appropriately surreal promo photos of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen. The latter two characters are actually drawn from the Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass, so clearly Burton is aiming to give the Lewis Carroll classic his own unique spin.
The USA Today article drops some hints about the direction of these changes, noting that Burton's version features a more grown-up Alice, who begins her adventures by escaping from a snooty Victorian dinner party only to fall back into Wonderland. She had been there once before but for some reason doesn't remember a thing about it. Posted 06.22.09 by reelz
Could Brad and Angie stop complaining about how hard it is to be famous? Could we all stop pretending that Benjamin Button deserves all these accolades? (See our review.)
Thankfully we have one Robert Downey Jr. to serve as a refreshing, rehabbed antidote to Brangelina. Downey participated in a Newsweek Oscar roundtable with Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway, Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella, and Sally Hawkins. Pitt does his usual being-me-is-so-hard-I-have-no-privacy-I-just-get-to-impregnate-Angelina thing, says he's never Googled himself, and says he doesn't even know how to use a computer (who is he, John McCain?).
The others pretty much confer with him, except for Downey who admits to Googling himself and says, "Oh, I love all that s*** personally. Sorry. I just love it. Because it's a hoot. Some people overstate their support, like they know you. Other people are busy doing something else and just want to go on this chat site and say some despicable character assassination, which I honestly think they kind of nailed it. I do have that shortcoming. It's really fun."
Downey's refreshing honesty continues later in the roundtable when he says, "Lately for me, the biggest, most commercial projects that I've done are the most creatively satisfying, the most collaborative and the ones that the audiences respond to."
We love a good indie as much of the next person, but after losing hours of our life to some of this year's dismal wannabe-prestige pics (you know who you are), it's nice to hear that Downey doesn't take it, or himself, as seriously as some of his cohorts. This bodes well for Iron Man 2. Posted 01.26.09 by reelz
It's not the same as raiding Miranda Priestly's or Anna Wintour's legendary designer closet, but Anne Hathaway fans can purchase the glasses, shoes, bathrobe, and other clothing and accesories the actress wore in Passengers. All items come with the official wardrobe tag attached. And not to leave out the gentlemen, many of Patrick Wilson's items are also on the block.
On second thought, you'll probably find more stylish offerings at Skymall. Posted 12.18.08 by reelz
Jill Simonian is a correspondent for Dailies (ReelzChannel TV, weeknights @ 6PM ET), and occasionally shares stories from the field. This week: Get Smart
Ok. So Steve Carell kisses Dwayne Johnson in Get Smart. Thought I'd get that out of the way. More about that later though. This one's about Steve's kicks.
As in SHOES. No, I'm not referring to Maxwell Smart's famously absurd shoe-phone-gadgets from the '60s TV show. Turns out that Carell himself has good shoes. Anne Hathaway told him so on the day of our recent junket interviews for the movie. And thanks to their antics together in Get Smart, I am officially "Carell-ed Away." (And so is Dwayne Johnson! Ha!)
Back to the junket: Earlier that day, Anne told us that she learned much on-set about comedy from working with Steve and Alan Arkin (2006's Little Miss Sunshine's 'grandpa'... also in Smart).
So, when I asked Steve about "what he learned" from working with Anne, he simply teased "her inner beauty and fashion sense," followed by a chuckle. Seriously, he cited her talent, kindness, obvious good looks, and gushed about her staggering ability to whip out super-high kicks -- as her own stunt double -- in some of the movie's powerhouse action scenes involving 7'2" two-time Mr. India bodybuilder, Dalip Singh. (Note: watching Steve go against this giant is classic Carell!) But Steve was also excited to boast that -- on the day of our interviews -- Anne complimented him for the very first time on a fashion choice... his new white sneakers. Cute.
But the real question is: Are they equipped to make international calls?
Get Smart opens nationwide Friday, June 20.

The news just keeps getting better for Sex and the City fans.
According to Variety, Chris Noth, aka Mr. Big, has indeed signed on to reprise his role for the Sex and the City movie!! Given, it's hard to imagine they would have moved forward with the project without him, but still, it sure is nice to have it confirmed.
As we reported last month, Anne Hathaway has signed onto Jonathan Demme's ensemble piece, Dancing With Shiva. Today's Variety says the actress will be joining Bill Irwin (Lady in the Water, The Laramie Project), Anna Deavere Smith (The West Wing, Rent) and Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, Forget Paris) in the comedy, which was written by Jenny Lumet. Filming begins next month in Connecticut.
Three more have signed on for the Timothy Linh Bui Christmas indie, Powder Blue, says The Hollywood Reporter. Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Ghost), Kris Kristofferson (Blade, The Wendell Baker Story), and Eddie Redmayne (The Good Shepherd) have joined the cast. Swayze will play a sleazy strip club owner, Redmayne will play a mortician who falls in love with a stripper who works there (Jessica Biel), and Kristofferson will play a corporate crime organization head. Could be quite interesting...
And finally, Warner Independent has plans to do a noir-style remake of the 1973 Bruce Lee martial arts classic, Enter the Dragon. According to Variety, the remake, which will be called Awaken the Dragon, will be written by producer Kurt Sutter (The Shield). Sutter will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. Jordan Catalano rises again! Yes, brooding, sexy Jared Leto has signed on to star in Belgian writer/director Jaco Van Dormael's American film debut, Mr. Nobody, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The romantic drama, a 'multilayered love story inspired by the butterfly effect' (the theory, not the movie) is about the 120-year-old Nemo Nobody (Leto), the last mortal in a world now full of happy immortals. Sarah Polley will co-star...
...In other news, Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada) continues to choose projects that show her range.
During press for her upcoming Get Smart remake with Steve Carell, the actress recently announced to Blackfilm.com that she has signed on to star in Jonathan Demme's next project, Dancing With Shiva, which she describes as a 'dark comedy.' She will play a model/drug addict who leaves rehab for the man who brought Hannibal Lecter to the silver screen.
Hathaway can next be seen in Becoming Jane, which opens in August. Posted 07.17.07 by reelz
Warner Brothers announced today that filming has just started on the comedy Get Smart, adapted from the popular television series.
Steve Carell plays Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway is Agent 99. The image to the right is the first pic from the set. The comedy adventure also stars The Rock as Agent 23, Terence Stamp as Siegfried and Alan Arkin as Chief of Control. Pete Segal (The Longest Yard) directs.
