One of our five favorite power couples has made it official. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie tied the knot late last month, which means that their impressive individual fiefdoms have now become an empire of massive proportions. In light of this big news, REELZChannel has put together a television special, Brangelina: Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood, which will air Thursday, September 4th at 10p ET/PT. There are more chances to watch this weekend; check schedule for details.
Brangelina's big news got us thinking about other power couples, and before the special premieres, we'd thought we'd run down our favorite high-powered pairs from all of human history. See if your favorite pair made the list.
When the god of sky, lightening, order, justice and law unites with the goddess of marriage, women and birth, what you wind up with is a couple with more power than any other in history. Not only did this pair rule the mortal world, they pretty much were the number one power couple among the gods. There's no doubt about the fact that these immortal A-listers deserved a spot on our list.
When a Roman dictator and an Egyptian Pharoh get together, the result is sure to be a power couple for the ages. Sure, Marc Antony was great and all, but did he reform a calendar for an entire civilization? Nope. Does anybody still talk about Antony’s grain subsidies? Didn’t think so. And who has an awesome salad named after him? That’s why Julius tops Antony when it comes to Cleopatra’s most powerful beaux.
We admit that Eleanor and Henry's relationship wasn’t perfect — he cheated on her, she may or may not have had an affair with his father, and there is the small matter of Henry imprisoning Eleanor for a good decade and a half. However they were all kinds of powerful. Between the Duchess of Aquitaine and the Duke of Normandy, there was plenty of power, landholdings and wealth between them, but when they were crowned the King and Queen of England they were the most powerful couple in the western world.
Being crowned queen and king of a country is a pretty big deal, crowning oneself and one’s wife as Emperor and Empress proves that you've got power and swagger to spare. Such was the case for Napoleon and Josephine, and though they divorced when Josephine was unable to produce an heir to the throne, Napoleon loved her to the end.
They may not actually have official royal titles, but Brangelina is undoubtedly Hollywood royalty. They were both famous and respected actors on their own, but when they became a couple, they were catapulted into the entertainment stratosphere. We’re guessing their wealth, power and real estate holdings could rival any of the non-deities on this list.
