Nina tells Dick that the Fleischman Foundation called to say that Dick's grant application has arrived just as Dick is opening a chain letter. He has no idea how a letter could give him luck, good or bad, and Mary observes that belief in chain letters is a silly superstition.
It’s the day before Thanksgiving, and Sally, encountering a store full of crazed grocery shoppers, rushes home to tell the other aliens that the apocalypse has arrived. On Thanksgiving morning Dick rushes to the university to find out what’s going on and finds it deserted.
Dick and Mary are invited to a reception for a new professor, and Mary asks Dick to try not to act so weird.
Harry finds a stray puppy, and while trying to establish communication with it, falls in love. Dick feels the need to experience physical affection, and when a hug from Harry misses the mark, his thoughts turn to Dr. Albright.
When Nina leaves Dick's grade reports on the computer and he has no idea how to retrieve them, it's clear that he's a physics professor who is computer illiterate. Vicki has been trying to get pregnant for a month with no success, so she and Harry visit a clinic.
