One of the best movies of the 90's, American Beauty is a must-see for any movie fan. Kevin Spacey gives a brilliant performance as a middle-aged man trying to find something more out of life than his bland existence.
Most people give this movie full credit, however I do believe this movie is highly overrated. It's hard to convey a good message in a movie when there are so many innuendos going on. It did make me laugh in a few scenes however!
It is one year anniversary today of the first time I saw American Beauty. It made me decide what I really want to do in life. I want to make movies like this one. Movies that make you really see the beauty of everything. Like I said, it has been one year since I've seen this movie, and for the last year I swear I have thought about it every day.
I know I have another comment, but I love this movie, and the summary simply does not do it justice.American Beauty tells the story of Lester Burnham, a relatively successful man whose life is void of any form of excitement.It is only when his controlling wife makes him go see his daughter's performance at a basketball game that he sees what his life could be like, in the form of Angela, his daughter Jane's friend. Lester thinks she is beautiful, but in reality she is narsasistic and self-absorbed. An alarm goes off in Lester, saying he needs to wake up and break out of his boring existence and live. Lester happily obliges, quitting his job and commencing to drive his wife crazy with his unpredictability. We know right from the beginning that lester will die at the end, because he tells us. But, by the end, we do not feel bad that he is dead, only that he was lucky enough to have his last year the best one of his life. Touching, funny, disturbing and above all, beautiful, this ismore than a movie. It's a wake up call.
This is my favorite movie. And I just saw it today. With miraculous twists and turns, this story of a disturbing suburban family is irresistible.
